Knowing Learner Needs

As an online instructor, I believe that it is highly important to understand the learner needs in an online setting. Oftentimes, students struggle with the assigned material because of lack of understand or lack participation. I like to encourage students to use me as their vehicle for learning.

Shelly,

I personally have used a number of tools, most of them synchronous tools such as Join.me, Skype, and other video conferencing tools. This allows me to connect with them one on one with audio, video and the all important screen sharing. Students can share they screen with anything they are working on: paper, computer program, etc. This allows me to give them the individual attention they need.

I am learning about online teaching. I am wondering how you have done tutoring for students who are struggling learning the content and need extra support?

Joseph,

So if students are not interacting in a positive way, what are some of the things that you do or might do to get them to interact in a positive way?

Understanding the learner's needs can sometimes be a challenging task- especially if students are not interacting in a positive way. I think its a great concept to offer yourself as a vehicle for their online learning.

Yes, I certainly want to encourage students to be more proactive and know where and how to look for answers. Asking questions is fine, but they must also know many ways to seek substantial answers for themselves when an instructor is not around.

Robert,

Do you mean from of a "remedial" nature primarily or in general maybe to enhance the students' learning? I oftentimes encourage students to search for alternative materials that might help them on an assignment. I want them to develop self-help skills so they can find answers to their own problems in real life and guide them in developing those skills.

Charolette:
Are you willing to provide them materials outside of the usual class materials if you sense that a student requires it. If so, have you found any problems with this practice? I often offer "outside" materials and this usually works fine, but in some instances it can cause additional challenges.

Charolette,

What kinds of things have you been able to do to encourage them to communicate with you and use you as a vehicle for their learning?
