Strategies for providing feedback

The course gave us many good strategies for providing feedback to students and one thing that I do in every class is post in the announcements when I will complete grading. I typically let them know via announcement and chat sessions, that I plan to grade by Wednesday and if there is any problem and I'm not able to grade by Wednesday, I'll post an announcement. I also post announcements when I'm done grading so students don't wonder and worry. I've notice that this cuts down on the number of emails I receive.

Are there strategies that you've developed in this area that you would like to share?

Amos,

I use Adobe Connect or Jing to record my voice and my edits to their work so students can see and hear me grade their work. Students love it.

Hello,
What strategies have you used and found that they do not work? I am looking for suggestions on strategies that will work with almost any class scenario. Are there any that you have found are limited to a particular classroom or setting?

Jeanice,

It's good to communicate with students in this way and develop a pattern of communication. Whatever works for you and your students is what will be beneficial. Thanks!

I post my grading times in the very first announcement that goes out. I also remind them around the middle of the first week because they have forgotten that it was posted in the original announcement.

Sarah,

I typically let students know when I expect to have graded posted in the LMS and do an announcement when they are posted as well. Thanks!

I like the idea of letting students know when grading is finished. In addition to keeping everyone up to date this would help to catch any assignments that were missed for grading or submitted incorrectly.

Our school has a standing deadline each week for when grades will be completed but I think I will try posting an announcement when I've finished each week - that seems like something that would really be helpful.

Thanks for sharing the good idea!

Stephanie and Jodi,

Thanks for your input. Glad you are learning from each other. It's always good to try new things. Thanks again.

Jodi, thank you for sharing how you post announcements around grading. This is a good idea that I am going to start doing. The school I teach for has established timeframes, where student assignments are due on Sundays and grading is due on Wednesdays. Up to this point I have only posted if an extenuating situation came up where grades would be late. I like the idea of posting an announcement when grades are posted for that unit.

Jodi,

Glad you learned many things in this class and thanks for sharing your experiences. I do the same. Students need to know when you are going to provide feedback, communicate, etc. It's great you let them know if you're not on the timeline. Thanks for sharing.
