I ususally provide my students with a study guide for each exam to ensure their studying/synthesizing success. This way they can focus on the material much more efficiently!
Austin,
I see your point. I think some instructors (online or F2F) feel the need to provide study guides, but many times the students become dependent on the study guides. This can be troublesome. Thanks for your input.
The study guides would depend on whether you are providing project based learning or summative assessment at the end of semester for written exams. So the study guide appears to be more appropriate for face to face learning than online.
Theran,
What I have tried a couple of times was to develop a discussion board just for posting general topics, concepts and definitions. I assign a group per chapter and they post the information on the discussion board each week. Therefore, the students build the study guide for me. Hope this is helpful.
I also try to provide a Study Guide for exams. It consists of general topics or concepts being covered in the exam, there are no answers given only a heads up.
Michael,
What all does this study guide contain? Many times online instructors feel like they give too much information in study guides and then students don't engage in learning - they just wait for the study guide. How do you prevent this? Thanks!
