Civility and Managing Overall Discussion Topic

In managing civility and discussion topics, I find that students have a tendency to use "text language". Of course, once I recognize the language I correct it immediately.

It is quite helpful to set the course expectations prior to the start of the course and to remind students of these expectations weekly by posting a weekly announcement.

This topic offered great insight.

Joseph,

Interesting point. . .give us an example, if you would please, of "discounted" computer language. Thanks!

As the proprietary institutions become more competitive in their efforts to recruit new students, I wonder if our need to discount computer language from assignments and discussion will still hold up, given that this form of communication is being developed much more rapidly than the use of the English language - much like a underemphasis on teaching cursive writing and the multiplication tables?

Chanel,

Thanks for bringing this up. I use a rubric to grade discussion board postings and professional language is a part of the points that can be earned. Texting language results in zero points. Thanks again.
