Pattern of Communication
When establishing a pattern of communication, what do you believe are the two most important things to consider and why?
Cynthia,
The tone and encouragement piece in communication is so important. Thanks for your input in these forums.
I believe that communication should be clear, timely and encouraging. Expectations should be posted in various online platforms to endure the student understands what to strive for and how to achieve curriculum goals. When communicating our tone should be encouraging and facilitate trust, respect and excitement.
Catherine,
As you are setting that good example, you are being a good role model for students and also showing them what "professionalism" looks like. Continue to be that good role model. Nice job.
Two of the most important considerations is setting a good example and providing detailed feedback to move the student toward the desired communication pattern.
Amer,
I can't agree with you more. I think your first one encompasses all of them - professionalism. Thanks!
I believe some of the most things when establishing a pattern of communication include:
1)Professionalism , i.e. ensuring that the rules of netiquette are incorporated .
2)Being respectful.
3)Ensuring proper grammar, punctuation, and composition ( always use spell check).
Terry,
A code of conduct helps all students understand the communication rules. When you have consequences, the code becomes even more real. Thanks!
The two important elements when establishing a pattern of communications are:
1. Creating a code of conduct for all your students to follow.
2. Follow through if any of the students do not adhere to that code of conduct. In other words, should you state that they will receive a zero or an incident report - then those protocols should be followed for all students.
Geri,
We have to serve as a role model in our communication and what we do in the course. Thanks!
As the instructor it is import to set the model for the students
Antonio,
Yes, being that role model is so vital and recognizing the importance is key. Keep making the learning fun! Thanks!
I do believe I have to lead by example. I make sure to address the students by name in my replies. I try to be the first one every week with the first post for the week.
My post have to be interesting. There is tons of information being presented to the students, most is dry, there is always something that can be done to make it fun. If you can link it to something outside the classroom, they will remember
Stacy,
Professionalism is so important. We have to serve as good role models in our communication, assessment, and all we do as we treat all students fairly. Nice job.
When establishing a pattern of communication, I believe in exhibiting a level of professionalism that I model and expect of my students.
In addition, I couple the professionalism with a pattern of fairness and consistency. Through this modelling, students begin to raise their level of professionalism and understand that they will receive the same level of fairness from me.
Sheila,
You're right. The audience, your students, and their level definitely affect how you communication and what you have to do to get them to communicate. Thanks!
It is important to consider the prior knowledge of your student and your personal expectations of appropriate communication. If you are teaching a course with adult learners, the rules of communication may not need to be as extensive as if you are teaching youth. You will also need to consider what you feel is appropriate in a course and find a way to clearly communicate this to your students.
Kimberly,
We have to be consistent in our communication with students - no doubt! And, they have to know when we are available and not available. This ensures that timeliness you're talking about. Thanks!
The two most important things for myself to consider in establishing a communication pattern are:
1) Timeliness
2) Effectiveness
Timeliness because how often an instructor checks email/phone calls can affect how well a student does in class. If the student does not feel the instructor will get back to them in a timely manner it may prevent them from reaching out. We can't expect them to be timely if we are not.
Effectiveness in our answers is extremely important. If our answers are not complete or effective then the students will not feel good about the answer.
Kim C
Sandra,
Good point. Those well-designed rubrics do play into developing a pattern of communication. Any time we can help students understand the expectations, the better.
Thanks!
