Hi All:

I believe establishing a pace/tone in the communication pattern is essential to help keep the communication going. Since online learning is flexible, this helps keep confusion down to a minimum Secondly, we as instructors should set an example. If we begin the class with what is expected and provide concise guidelines, this will help with communication from I2S, S2I and S2S.

Jackie

Sandy and Steven,

Thanks for continuing the conversation and the clarification. Consistency is a key point.

Thanks again.

Sandy,

Excellent. Communication is essential to ensure students comprehend what they are supposed to be doing and why. Modeling the proper behavior is so important. We have to be good role models!

Thanks!

Steven, I agree. I was a bit wordy in my response to the questions but it does all come to being clear and consistent. If find whenever I provide a little "wiggle room" for the students, consistency goes out the window and it can have a negative impact on communication and the student's learning.

Sandy U.

1. Develop clear expectations that includes all levels of communication including time frames when students can expect a response from the instructor.

2. Ensure that instructors model the behavior and follow through with any consequences stated in the expectations to reinforce the importance of the communications protocols established.

Stephanie and Melissa,

Anything we can do to clearly explain the communication process and expectations in the course is awesome. Thanks!

Stephanie,

Consistent and ongoing are essential concepts of developing a pattern of communication. I like that you provide feedback on their ideas as well as assignments. Nice job.

Jacinda,

Ah - precision. I don't think that has been discussed before. Your bring up a very good point. As for your question about which generation is the easiest to establish a pattern of communication with - I think it depends on the instructor's generation as well. We may connect better to our own generation and not "far away" generations. Just a thought.

Melissa,
I also like the concept of a Communication Code of Conduct. It clearly spells out expectations and sets the guidelines our online students so often need. There is a tendency to forget the "formal" nature of communicating in the online environment but a Code of Conduct gets students started on the right foot and also serves as a good reminder.

When establishing a pattern of communication I find consistent feedback and ongoing communication are key. Ongoing communication establishes a level of rapport that helps to foster open communication and proactive communication. Feedback gives students a fair idea of where he or she stands, not just on assignments, but also in regard to their ideas on discussion posts, etc. Feedback is reassurance in many ways.

I think that the two most important things to consider when establishing a pattern of communication are clarity and precision. This is because all students should understand the expected pattern of communication. The instructor must enforce the precision of this pattern in order to make sure that students do not deviate from it. Clear and precise patterns of communication will allow instructors to set boundaries for communication and keep the instructor/student relationship professional.

Out of the 3 generations highlighted, which group do you feel it easiest to establish a precise pattern of communication? Why?

Thanks,
Jacinda

Nicholas,

Consistency is essential. Providing those examples will also make it more clear to students. Nice job.

Have a great day!

First, you should be consistent in your communication and requirements. Second, you should provide examples in your communication that can be exemplars for students to follow.

Miriam,

This rapport you are building will lead to mutual respect and we can't say enough about respect. Thank you.

1. Consistency
2. Rapport
With consistency students and instructors will know learn the importance of time management and expectations.
With rapport one can learn professionalism and relationship building skills.

Cynthia,

Balance is many times difficult to achieve, but it must be our goal. The FAQ movement and establishing an effective pattern of communication will help. Good info. Thanks!

rebecca,

We so many times serve as a role model and don't even know it. We have to be a good example in our communication and all other aspects of the course. Good point!

gene ,

Respect can be the key component. We have to earn it though. But, with the other components, you'll get there. Thanks!

Dr. Crews,

Overall, there must be a balance in expectations in the online environment. There tends to be an imbalance when it comes to communication.

The expectation is that instructors are frequently and expeditiously communicating in the online environment. However, there are times when students are asking questions that clearly reveal that they have not read the information already provided.

Certainly, this is how the FAQ movement started. Online, I find that when I search for help from developers of any type of product, often I am asked to look to see if my question has already been answered.

My syllabus and announcements include reminders of essentials that students need on a weekly basis, yet, the answer to a large percentage of the questions I receive can be found in the reading materials provided.

It is important that we establish a pattern of communication that calls our scholars to be responsible and accountable for the information and materials provided in writing.

1. Setting the example is primary. The students look to the teacher to model the correct behavior.
2. Being consistent. The teacher is on view 24/7 when interacting with students and so must continually monitor her words and actions.
