The two most important issues in communication is 1) netiquette and 2) being clear, concise, complete and accurate in your directions as the instructor. Setting boundaries are extremely important as well as maintaining the boundaries.
Nate,
Consistency is an important factor. As we serve as role models, we can show students what consistency is all about. Thanks!
The two most important things to consider when establishing a pattern of communication is the ability to establish consistency and to model appropriate communication.
Consistency is needed so as to not confuse the student. If on one hand you are saying not to use text language, then you use text language in certain areas of the course, the student may become confused, use text language themselves, and/or many other things. Be consistent.
Modeling appropriate communication is vital; it also helps with consistency. The students will always look to the instructor for what is expected. If you model appropriately, the students will follow.
Elizabeth,
Me too. Communication is a key element to the success of students and delivery of content.
I would also agree that communication must be clear and consistent for a successful class!!
Angela,
I definitely agree. Tone and content are essential. We Ned to think carefully before speaking. Nice job.
Theran,
Staying up to date on the discussion boards takes time, but is worthwhile. The facilitation is the important thing. Keep up the good work.
Alan,
Yes, consistency, a pattern and discipline are all key components. Keep up the good work.
Peter,
Trust, the development of community, and establishing good communication is essential. Thanks for your input.
Lawrence,
A pattern is good. Help students see the importance of communication and serve as a good role model. Thanks.
Dr. Crews,
I believe tone and content are important. When thinking about one's perspective you have to know that everyone doesn't think the same, so one must choose their words wisely, to ensure no one gets offended. As far as content is concern, I teach IT courses and sometime the content starts to go in other directions, such as complaints about programming or software companies. I encourage my students to stay on topic within the content material we are discussing.
In reading the responses I see many wonderful statements. As such I cannot come up with anything new, so must be somewhat repetitive:
1. Timely, be responsive to those communications sent or posted to me. Example: Students would not be seeking help, clarification, or further detail, if the student was not confused, thus we can help them better understand what is expected, and decrease stress levels by being responsive.
2. Thorough and clear. Based on past experience I have discovered that communication can be misunderstood, misconstrued, etc., and providing needed detail in clearly understood and proper construct is time saving, and easier on the student(s).
Relative to establishing a pattern of communication the most important thing to consider is instructor presence. Historically I try to be involved early and often. I try to post something everyday to discussion boards, and check emails two or more times a day. Ironically, I find this takes less time, but it does take discipline. Students know that I am there, and it facilitates everything and more posted on the lecture relative to patterns for communication.
Trying to answer the question posted, the second most important thing is a toss up. Although not the second most frequent, I think supporting is the second most important. Helping students know that they can achieve. I know the rewards and satisfaction there have been most overt :o)
1. It is a shame we only have 2 to choose from. Trust is vital. All parties must trust the communication is true, helpful, understandable, encouraged, engaging, respectful, and has applicable meaning to what is being communicated.
2. Establishing the ability to have all parties “listen with the intent to understandâ€. Sometimes we have to slow down the process to digest the information and appreciate its content. Each party should engage in a process that enables both sides to fully understand the other’s point of view. This does not mean we have to agree with it.
Erina ,
Yes, you are right. Remember you are the role model. Thanks!
A pattern of communications should focus on the instructor being consistent and substantive. For example, instructors should post announcements that help students learn and absorb the material. In addition, the communications should give students feedback, especially on graded assignments.
You should always be consistent and professional in your communications. Even if a student is responding in a poor manner. You should also be consistent in treating all students fairly.
Mike,
I totally agree. Once students put things into their own words, you know they have a better understand and they are not just duplicating or restating someone else's thoughts. Thanks!
Trina,
Yes, and through this, you serve as an excellent role model. Keep it up!
Jeanice,
Yes, the development of that professional, yet caring community between students and instructor is important. Thanks!
