William,

You are so right. Rubrics help both the instructor and the students. Thanks for your input.

William,

You are so right. A bad rubric can be devastating. It's essential to carefully design your rubrics to assess the learning outcomes. Thanks!

Zakaria,

Excellent. It's important to think carefully about the benefits of rubrics and how they help both online instructors and students. Thank you.

Brandon,

Good explanation of how the rubric helps the students. Remember that the rubrics also help the online instructors as well. Thank you for your input.

I like rubrics too although a bad rubric can be just as hazardous as a good one is helpful. I have seen rubric mandated by universities that were difficult for even the instructor to understand and use and others that did not reflect the outcome of the assignments well. I am working on just such a rubric now in which the student does not need to know much about the subject matter but only needs to know how to write with proper grammar, spelling and use of APA formatting to pass the assignment. The percentage for each category is equal.

It actually has several roles, it informs th student prior to completing the assignment what the expectations are. It also guides the instructor in grading keeping them consistent and relative to the learning outcomes. It also provides the student with an opportunity to self-evaluate their work.

Beth,

The rubrics do provide a way for students to understand more clearly on how their grade was achieved. This helps eliminate many questions.

Melinda,

There you go. "Judging" so many times seems more subjective. Thanks for your input.

Amanda,

Consistency is a good word to describe rubrics. They provide consistent grading and students understand the expectations more clearly and consistently. Thanks!

compreca,

Guidance is a good word to use when describing rubrics. The students and instructors both get guidance from the rubric. Thanks!

Emry,

I am so glad you noted that rubrics help both instructors and students. Thanks for your input.

Elivett,

Yes, rubrics help all stakeholders -> Students and Instructors. Nice job.

Hello,
Provides guidance for the student.
Sets expectations.
Provides consistency for the instructor and the school.
Offers fairness.

Thanks,
Compreca

Rubrics are a great way to help eliminate the subjectivity of grading. By providing clear and concrete expectations and guidelines, students are able to develop their assignments knowing that how much effort and energy they exert can be readily measured. Those students looking to "skate by" may meet minimum standards while those seeking to achiever higher grades are able to be comprehensive and detailed in their materials.

Rubrics also help eliminate the question students frequently pose - "Why did you give me this grade?" A rubric allows the instructor to point to very specific requirements that either were or were not met and thereby support the grade.

I am uncomfortable "judging" work, but a good rubric makes evaluation concrete and clear for all.

Hello,

I believe the number one role of a rubric is consistency. If students feel there is a consistent method of grading in place, they feel like it's a fair/even arena of learning in the class. It takes away any doubt of singling students or partiality in the students' minds.

Rubrics provide grading aids for an assignment as well as the levels of quality of the expected outcome. In my experience I found that they make the grading process more transparent. But since this a communication training class, let me just stress on the role of a rubric as a communication component. The use of a rubric communicate expectations and articulate fundamental criteria for each learning outcome, and thus would help instructional effectiveness in terms of written communication. And from feedback point view, as we know, there are many ways that students can receive feedback, and when rubrics are used, rubrics can provide feedback along several dimensions and can lead to more detailed feedback where the feedback can be explicit, and could be effective if thoughtfully delivered and is based on the rubrics.

The role of a rubric helps to establish a guideline to both the instructor and the student that allows them to see the point distribution of a particular assignment. It enables the student to see where they went wrong and it gives the instructor an uniform, standardized method of approaching the grading of an assignment. This way, it gives the instructor a fair and consistent way of assessing the student's work.

Cheers
Emry

To provide guidance for both student and instructor and to also provide an expectation.

The rubric is designed to help students understand what the requirements of an activity or project are and to know what exactly is expected of them. Also, they will understand how point values are assessed for each section of the assignment.
