A Scoring Rubric

A scoring rubric is an attempt to communicate expectations of quality around a task. It communicates the “rules to a game and how the game should be played” A well designed rubric can inspire students to rise to the occasion consistently and minimize misunderstanding, frustration, and unnecessary time and effort to complete any assignment(s).

Joseph,

I think the more you work with rubrics, the less challenging they become. They become such great resources for the students and instructor. Thanks!

I find that using rubrics is challenging, but provides a framework for assessing students' work. The most effective rubrics take into consideration the objectives and outcomes of an assignment, evaluate how well each portion of the assignment is covered, how well it is supported by critical thinking, whether personal experience or a real world example is used, the importance of the concepts presented, how well the response is written and whether professional, scholarly sources were used for research to support the points made. A well designed and properly used rubric helps ensure consistency in formative feedback and grading. The use of a rubric also minimizes student challenges and questions over grades.

Genieve,

So true. Rubrics are helpful to both students and instructors. We want to help students improve and understand the expectations so they can achieve the learning outcomes. Thanks!

Hello Augustine,
Yes! Rubrics are an important tool within the online classroom. This particular tool clears up all of confusion with how points are allocated for a particular assignment. This tool also provides a means for the student to know which areas need to be improved upon.

Geri,

And, rubrics help the instructors as well as the students. The instructors benefit from rubrics as they can review the assignment/project and make sure the objectives are being measured appropriately. Rubrics also help instructors grade more efficiently and effectively. Thanks!

Rubics help set the expectations and the outcomes according to the learning objectives of the class.

Augustine,

Rubrics should definitely help the students understand the expectations and how to achieve the learning objectives. Developing appropriate criteria is the key. Thanks!
