Posting
Posting to discussion sessions should always be meaningful and not forced. Over the years, I've encouraged many posting through encouraging students through praise and adding additional references to supplement their posts; thus, encouraging further posting from them.
Richard,
Good point. It's good that you are encouraging students to get involved in the discussions.
I like having the students respond to posted forum discussions. This shows me that they are really thinking about the question and responding in a positive way.
Chris,
Consistency and frequency are two key words that are typically related to discussion board postings. However, when we just assess frequency (quantity) and not quality, there is an issue. Good point.
In my experience, it is a requirment for students and instructors to post to thier Discussion Boards at a frequent rate. This has indeed caused the quality of the posts to suffer. The students discussion submissions also trigger thier attendance, so its encouraged to post frequently for the wrong reasons. sad...
Heidi,
Good discussion board conversations can help students learn the content through communication. We have to continue to that conversation online. Thanks for your input.
