Perry ,

A good thread in conversation is going on in this forum. Nice job. Thank you for your input and carrying on the conversation.

Elizabeth,

Rubrics serve as a guide for students and instructors. This helps everyone do "their job" better. Thanks.

Kathleen,

Anything that helps you immensely is well worth the effort. Rubrics can be difficult to develop, but are well worth taking the time to do so.

Carolyne,

So glad you love rubrics and think they are great. They do help students and instructors alike.

Darcel,

Yes, they make your job and the "students' job" easier as everyone understand the expectations and how they are going to be assessed. Thanks.

Perry and Nicole,

You are right - the level of quality can improve with the use of rubrics. When students understand the expectations and the criteria help them improve, the quality of work will improve as well.

Perry ,

Right on! When effective rubrics are designed, they help the students understand the expectations and help the instructors grade more objectively.

Colleen,

The key is that rubrics help both the instructor and the students.

Thanks for sharing.

Hello Tena,

The role of a rubic is to be a guide for students to assess if they are completing task in the format that the instructor has given.

The rubic guides the student towards the goals of the learning method that is being used. If followed the student will get the most out of the task while getting approval from the instructor as well.

I have used rubrics, and they help me immensely. It helps me balance my assignments. I can see if my am putting too much or not enough emphasis on one particular area. I can also see what areas students have grasped and where they are deficient.

I think rubrics are great! The student knows what is expected as an outcome and how many points are received for each part of the assignment or discussion. The rubric helps the student understand what was omitted or done incorrectly. It makes grading of an assignment much easier for the instructor.

I think the role of the rubric is to provide a clear cut evaluation of the students work. I say this because students are made aware of the rubric on the first day of class, and the expectations are set that day. So it makes my job easier when grading online.

The rubric also moves students forward to “think outside the box” and provide expected research, and it teaches students how to surpass the expectation of an assignment.

Alexander and Vicki,

Slight errors may occur even when using a rubric, but as long as we amend the errors, quickly, I think we can well recover and advance. However, in general, I agree that we use rubrics to decrease the likelihood of inconsistencies, and the outcomes are good to have fairness applied in classes!

Sincerely, Perry Spann

Nicole,

I appreciated reading your notation about rubrics and agree with you that rubrics offer instructors methods to objectively examine course work. The rubrics are general or generic to the criteria, so the individual submissions are evaluated fairly and ethically based on the content in the rubrics. The students may obtain the same assignment and same rubrics, though the quality of the work can vary based on fulfilling the criteria in the rubrics, so the use of the rubrics allows for objective evaluation of assessment.Thank you for your sharing your post about rubrics.

Sincerely, Perry Spann

Greetings!

I think the role of rubrics in classes are to offer students feedback, assessment, and clarity of the course objectives for the guidelines or criteria to have specific learning outcome as a measurement system. I think rubrics offer effective communication about students advancing in classes and the applications or efforts given to learn in classes. The rubrics make clear the purposes or intent of the learning events promoted with consistency and clarity.

The framework offered by rubrics reflects communication, organization, structure, and discipline being important parts of the course. Thank you for asking.

Sincerely, Perry Spann

The role of a rubric is to provide expectations for an assignment. It clarifies the requirements of the assignment. Using a rubric allows the grading process to be transparent and consistent.

Dr. Vicki,

Right on. The rubric should help us be more consistent in our evaluation of the students' work. And, remember, we are not evaluating the students, but their work. ;-)

Hi Alexander (or Alex): I see your point; as long as human beings are grading the work, there will be some inconsistencies. But that's why using a rubric is so important because it lessens the probability that 10 instructors will assess the same assignment 10 different ways. Most adult learners like the control that comes with knowing what the grading criteria are for their assignments and a good rubric will give them that control. Vicki W

samia & Nicole,

Yes, when subjectivity is taken out and the students understand the expectations, they are more like to achieve the course learning outcomes. nice job.

samia,

Excellent. Rubrics do help all involved - students and the instructor. Nice job.
