Emry,

You make a great point in that you have to give them feedback that addresses their results of their self analysis. They need to know how to use their talents and deal with their weaknesses!

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

James,

What a great post and I love the term of creating an advance organizer. Also, so many of the resources to help students can be created and reused in other courses.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Marie,

Great post! I also give real life scenarios of what procrastination means and introduce them to the calendar.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Melissa,

You are right, time management is so many times the underlying factor of the other problems that exist.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Dana ,

Good point. I also know that you can create different tutorials using technology to address those issues. Most of the weaknesses are not unique to the student. This will also reduce workload!

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Darren,

Yes, we have to use the data! We must also make sure to let students know their strengths and what it means to them.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Cyndy,
True, you have to have basic technology skills. I also think we are doing a disservice if we encourage students that don't have access to a computer in the home to take an online course. We are adding an additional barrier.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Emily,
They also don't think we can "take roll" in an online course. That is all beginning to change based on federal guidelines.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Shelly,

I am not sure who tells them that. This is where I think the self analysis becomes so important.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Kathy ,

That is true no matter the age of the student. Traditional students think they can do the work anytime. Well, anytime isn't on my calendar.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Kathy ,

I agree. I try to help them with time management but it is still on their shoulders. . . .

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Jack,

True, I also think that giving an online assessment starts the confidence building regarding use of technology. That is the first victory for many!

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Jack,

Yes, and we can determine where we need to provide extra resources. Good answer.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

We need if there will be a minimum of skills to handle technology, and as many of my colleagues say it, what will be the best learning method for the student to use

Just to add to what Jim said, students may be scared to access technology. This fear may or may not be handled by the student. I have seenvary rare cases in which the student could not handle it.

Steve,

I agree with your suggestion. My university has a predesigned task list. P1DB is the introduction. So my plan is to recommend that a revision to P1DB introduction or to at least include in the intro a question such as “what do they really think they need to succeed in this course?”

Tanya & Melissa,
Yes--very true. Often my students become overwhelmed with work and family commitments that they often will miss submitting an assignment. If they do not get back into the flow of submitting timely assignments then often they will give up. If they lack the motivation to get back on track--I will establish a time line for them to submit this task on this date and so on and so forth to help get them back into the rhythm.

Students are under the belief that they can ‘squeeze’ 1 or 2 online courses into their already overly booked schedules. Many students are full time employees and parents as well as adult children caring for their elderly parents and so often they are unaware of the rigorous course schedule that require good time management and study skills. Thus, a self-analysis inventory for students can provide them with a realistic snapshot of expectations in an online course.

I definitely agree with a lot of what is being said in other posts. Perception is definitely key and many students have this perception of what it means to be a successful online student. This self-analysis inventory helps students to recognize what is needed to be successful online and helps them to determine whether or not it is the right fit for them. I have had students, in the past, who really did not do well in the online learning environment.

One of the courses I used to teach actually focused on some of the areas needed to be successful online and helped students to develop skills in those areas.

Asking online students to complete a self-analysis inventory is important because it helps students assess their own potential for academic success and makes them aware of barriers to success in the online environment. The self-analysis can lead to fruitful online discussions between instructors and their students which can benefit all students in understanding the basic principles of success for online learning. The self-analysis also helps instructors discern which students might need additional information and coaching in order to maximize their online learning opportunities, such as time management skills.
