Assessment

How would you use the Bloom's Taxonomy & Social Media Tools steps to evaluate your students' work in a social networking site?

Bloom's taxonomy is a widely understood rubric to measure critical thinking.

It expands from knowledge to comprehension to application, to analysis, evaluation and synthesis. A student progressing through items that are linked to this taxonomy shows increased mastery of the content and evaluation of its validity and reliability and connection to other knowledge. The evaluation of student work would entail their understanding, applying to a social networking site or environment, evaluating different social networking resources and then incorporating or synthesizing with other work or knowledge.

Of course! I use it in every lesson plan so why wouldn't it carry over to an online assessment as well. It is a good structure to follow also if you are a beginning learner of social media an online courses.

I would use a rubric and find out if the students understand what is required when interacting with social media. I would also use it as a guide to determine the depth of discussion questions.

In particular to the synthesis, making sure that all things are synthesized for verification or improvement of outcome

That's a good one. I am not a fan of social media, so I do not think that I would ever use a social networking site. Regarding Bloom's Taxonomy, this is an excellent way to ascertain a student's level of learning.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is an excellent way to evaluate the level of understanding of the each student. We have each student relate the course content to their own experiences through essay questions and discussions. This is a great way to see how they interact at the higher levels of learning.

Ramonica,

This may be the time you create a rubric to keep everyone track. It sets expectations and allows you to do efficient evaluation.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I would compare the usage of the language associated with both and go from there to assure the students are in fact getting the content

Absolutely. The rubric would cover the items I mentioned.

Vallorie ,

You really have thought this through. Would you use a rubric?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I would find out if they are critically understanding what is required of them when it comes to interacting on a social media network site.
This would fall under cognitive skills, I believe.

I also would want to put in place the skills they need, such as proper writing skills, to be able to successfully commit to, say for example, blogging. Important use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation would have to be a major factor.

I want them to feel good about their basic communication among their peers, and feel like they can express their thoughts in a learning environment.

Then as they apply what they learn through face to face interaction, they will feel more comfortable writing in a social network setting.
I would want them to accurately analyze their work up against another student's as far as responding to whatever content may be required in a social network discussion setting.

Gregory,

These are great criteria; would you use a rubric to communicate that?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I would make sure their work relates to the content of the course and is pertinent. Also I would evaluate their communication skills and how they represent themselves with social media.

Karen,

Would you use a rubric to assess the social media?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Dori,

You said the magic assessment word for me; model appropriate behavior. It is good to have the rubrics but students need to see what is a great communication tool and why.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

As described in the course, I would probably give points based upon the following:

Promptness of Response and Initiative;
Relevance and Consistency of Posts
Perhaps extra points for correct citing of sources
Perhaps extra points for correct grammar and spelling too

I would carefully monitor, model appropriate behavior, have an active presence, and set clear expectations of the students for this task. I would then see if they showed knowledge/comprehension for the subject, chose appropriate tools to fit specific goals, were able to analyze and revise to improve and finally, evaluate based on the optimal solution for a specific problem. That's according to Bloom's Taxonomy.

Gemma ,

It really gives them opportunity to critically review information and determine value. Way up there on the Bloom's Taxonomy!

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Thank you and frankly I've never though of following a blog as an assignment I think that's an excellent assignment and have them cope the link and their responses. I'm going to implement that in my class. It enforces and encourages them to use their critical skills additionally if they select the expert they want to follow and blog with that means that they most likely will select someone of interest to them.
