Social Network

If a student posted inappropriate information on social media, would you respond privately explaining the information was inappropriate?

Mia,

That really isn't very different than real life is it? When we see how people act we form opinions. Great post!

If my student posts something inappropriate, of course I would contact him/her as quickly as I can. I would explain to the student the importance of proper behavior online. What a lot of students don't realize is that others see their posts also and begin to form an idea of their association in their personal life. That may or may not be fair but it dose happen quite a bit. So displaying appropriate behavior online is more important than the students think.

Roshawna,

yes, I would respond privately but swiftly. It can be the best teaching tool you have. You also have to determine the motive for the post. Was it due to ignorance or selfishness.

Yvette,

There are so many examples of bad behavior in the online social media to use as a teaching moment. I have a colleague right now at another institution that is on administrative leave due to comments made in Facebook. FYI, he was a communications instructor!

Hello Roshawna:

inappropriate behavior in the online environment should be addressed, expeditiously. Continuous mischief can disrupt the learning process for others and can also be offensive.
