social networking

I'm still new at the encouraging of social networking tools to my students. However, this module is a motivation for me to do more work on appropriately integrating social networking. Sharoff (2013) noted the value of using social networking tools for nursing students

John,

Please ask the questions! When we talk about tagging we are posting a public message in social media but we may aim it at particular people. That is tagging. It is kind of like creating a overt message and then a covert message with public posts with tagging. Blogging can be created through a host of sites online or can be done through the LMS> Tweets are called microblogging. THey are great to teach succinct writing.

Hello Heidi and Dr. Wilkinson,

I Teach general studies at OCM, and am quite new to the entire social media madness. However, I do recognize its many valuable benefits. Unfortunately, I am so new to this media, that some of my questions might seem too basic or naive. For instance, going through the first part of this course, several phrases were mentioned -- some which I have heard before -- but am basically clueless about. For example:
1) what is "tag" or "tagging?"
2) blogging? (I'm familiar with a blog, but how would one develop his or her own blog?
3)tweets (same as above)
4) Web 2.0?

Perhaps these will all be explained as I complete the course, but I just wanted to post here first, just in case.

Respectfully,

John

Heidi,

I would love that! That is a sign that students are engaged. You are modeling it with citations and providing engagement they in turn reach for more and become life long learners. That is our goal isn't it?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

I very much agree. As a medical librarian, I do see a number of nurse students with increasingly high interest in supplementary references related to courses.

Heidi,

I have seen some really good resources used by nursing faculty in online environment. Nursing has really looked at the online environment as an opportunity to provide quality learning to diverse areas and students. Taking advantage of technology has been their calling card!
