As an online professor, I would assess students use of media hosting and sharing of sites by requiring an online survey for all students in class. The surveys would include questions on the information supplied to students incorporating the rubrics in class. Measurement of student knowledge retained from the sites would be analyzed from the completed surveys.
Ruth,
Have you thought about you and your students develop a evaluation tool together then use it to evaluate a site? This could be very powerful for you and your students to implement.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Kimberly,
Use a rubric or have students develop a rubric ( you don't have to call it that) to use to evaluate media sites and the effectiveness.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Some ways that you may be able to assess students' use of media hosting and sharing sites, is to have to access the site, and have them look for specific items to discuss either in a course discussion forum, or have them discuss the topics openly in class. You may also have them view the site content, and them give them an objective test afterwards. You could also have them write and submit an essay on what knowledge they gained from the site. There is simply a number of ways you might assess the students' use of hosting and sharing sites.
I would try to come up with an exercise that would consist of sharing information with their peers and evaluate how well they are able to do so. One that ask a lot of questions probably struggles in this area so this would give me an idea of who and how to approach these individuals.
Gracie,
I agree with you. It is important to create expectations upfront and hold students to it.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I would set up an assignment list that was very clear in what they should include...I would have a very clear checklist type rubric...and I would make sure they accomplished all tasks accordingly.
Rickey,
WHat is a study board. How would you assess your projects?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Aldgenette,
Don't you think this eases your own workload and helps guide the student through the assessment?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I would possibly conduct a study board or just get involved with a group project or presentation.
As an on ground instructor that teach all web-based classes, I have developed a rubrics that I use in order to assess students understanding of the materials covered. The categories and percent credit in each rubric are based on the assignment, projects, and activities given. Others assessments are electronic provided by the publishers.
Hector,
It is a great tool for that. You want to make sure that your rubric reflects your outcomes for the assignment and for the learning objectives of the course.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Jane,
You said the magic words, "as long as the content meets the learning objectives". This is so important for using and assessing this type of project. You want to engage students without creating barriers for others. It will be a challenge.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Catherine,
I agree with you. You will need to determine your objectives in using the media and create the rubric from your objectives.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I'll have to agree that the use of rubrics here would probably be the most appropriate. In order to be able to know that the most appropriate items have been completed in a good manner, rubrics can provide that detail that is needed here as a whole.
Hello Dr. Wilkinson,
I would use a rubric. The use of rubrics makes the evaluation of students' use of media hosting and sharing sites more objective and easier to complete.
Hector Morales
Just as we have a component for presenting an essay in APA format with the rest of the rubric dedicated to content, I think developing a rubric that includes a percentage for use of media hosting would be appropriate.
Enhancing student learning is the goal, and unless it is a video or graphic arts course, then meeting the learning objective should still be the focus of the assessment. Some students will be overjoyed to develop a complex video or blog, while others may be novices to the medium. As long as the content meets the learning objectives, then a small percentage of the grade could be for the overall quality of the work.
Jeffrey,
I agree. A rubric that specifically defines how the outcomes are measured is the key to assessing.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
From what I have read so far in this course, the real answer to how to assess a student's use of media hosting and sharing sites is: "It depends". To answer this we must ask ourselves: What is success and how do we measure it? For some assignments relating to media hosting, a rubric could be developed to assess the particular assignment. Other ways to assess include multiple choice or true/false or writing a report. What is most important to consider here is the course learning outcomes expected and base the assessment on those. One of suggestions I really liked was the use of digital portfolios which could be assessed on their learning outcomes and creativity as well student's use of the technology. We could assess the growth of these portfolios during the course by requiring assignments within the portfolio at the beginning and end of the course.
Nathan,
Those are great ideas. You do have to make sure there is a clear purpose of the assignment. This isn't just busy work as some facebook stuff is.
