Blogging versus tweets

I prefer blogging over tweets because with tweets, students may be inclined to "shoot from the hip" in creating responses. With blogging, the student must spend more time formulating a response which gives more time for reflection and analysis.

Alicia,

Could you use a tool for "backchanneling" tool such as Todaysmeet.com? Look at it for your real time discussion.

Hi Jean,

Yes I agree. I think microblogging could be effective in a "real-time" assignment. For instance , watching the State of the Union Address and having students question certain proposed policies, audience clapping etc. However, blogging could be more effective for analysis or varying viewpoints or as a reflection after the fact. I guess it all comes down to what type of an assignment you want to engage your students in.

Jean,

You want to do what you feel comfortable in what you do. If tweeting doesn't fit in your assessment/ objectives don't use it. You don't want to overload students with this type "work" if it really has no purpose.

The spontaneity of a tweet works when trying to capture a current event. However, for R & D not rigorous/rich enough to report as a fact ( just a trend of the moment).

What do you think?

Jean

Michael,

That is a great point. We are seeing that "shooting from the hip" going viral in the media. it is a great life lesson.
