Accessible Software
What is one speech recognition software that is used by many people with or without a disability?
Hello Renee and Colleagues, :-)
One type is the Dragon Naturally Speaking software. I've seen it advertised in the media and have considered purchasing it for myself for those times when it may be more efficient to use it rather manual typing. As we are not allowed to recommend specific brand names to students, I advise those who are interested in the technology to do an Internet speech recognition search to view available software.

Personally, I use Dragon Naturally Speaking, and I am not disabled. I find that Dragon is an outstanding piece of software. I would expect that many people without a disability also use the application.

BRIGITTE ,
Oh yes so many things have changed since I wrote my doctoral papers. The ease of which is often amazing.

Hello Renee
The one speech recognition feature which I personally use and is used by thousands of people is Dragon Speech. Personally, I use this feature to slim down the time it takes to type up my doctoral papers. I think this is a great and inexpensive way for students who are challenged to type school work. With pros there are cons, such as typos due to the fact that the software does not always recognize words or confuse words such as face with phases.

Corliss,
Yes, sometimes is takes a little bit of practice but the software can be so helpful for all people. Thanks for being in the class.

Speech recognition software can be purchased from office supply stores or online orders. Some have 99 percent accuracy. Some software integrates easily with the Microsoft Office suite and has intuitive editing options, dictation, transcription and voice control, with speed and accuracy.
Jean,
I don't personally use a MAC but have heard that their software is very effective. Thanks for being in the class.

Yes, Dragon is the most accessible one and is promoted in the online community.
However, did you know that most MAC computers come with speech recognition software.
I actually us it when my hands get tired of typing.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Jean
I bought Dragon to use instead of typing but did not get it set up.
Phyllis,
I think that MD were some of the first adopters of this technology.

Dragon software is one type of speech recognition software that is utilized by even Doctors when posting their chart notes.
Jerri,
I haven't used a new version but it did have a difficult time with medical terminology.

Dragon Naturally speaking is something that is in use by a lot of people with and without disabilities. When it first came out it was not as easy to use but the technology has improved such that some will use it for business as well as personal use. I do know of someone who used it for school papers. At one time I tried to use it for medical transcription but its vocabulary was not in tune with medical terminology. I imagine at this stage it probably works well for that purpose.
Christopher,
Glad that you are finding Dragon Naturally Speaking so helpful!

Dragon Naturally Speaking. This tool is awesome. I use it to assist with grading my student's assignments. The reason why it is so awesome because it learns your vocabulary. I can't even type as fast as the software produces. Of course, there may be some modifications required
Michael ,
That is so true. I need to start doing that myself when I have the chance to slow down and update!

Hello Renee,
One of my colleagues used Dragon Naturally Speaking software to enhance his productivity. He maintained that it reduced the time he spent in tasks like providing feedback.
I can see that it could be very beneficial for people with limited dexterity or coordination.
Sincerely,
Michael Luzius
Yes, I can attest to this being terrific software. Both my father, who has restricted physical abilities in one hand, and my husband who has no physical disabilities have used it. My husband used it to write papers while in school; he just found it very helpful to quickly get all his initial ideas documented in the rough-draft stages of writing. He would then go back and refine it without the software, but it became a very useful tool.
dragon - in my early days involved with pre-internet applications - being able to speak and the computer typing it out was what we thought would be a requirement within a successful and accessible system. we were wrong. software like dragon was successfully developed and had somewhat of a minor success and is still used today.
our ex vice president did not invent the internet but I was there when it was made into a common man's highway
