Online Learners with Disabilities | Origin: EL111

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Assistive Technologies for the Online Learner --> Online Learners with Disabilities

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

To provide for those students that may have learning disabilities by using various techniques.

Students may have hidden disabilities that are not physical. I like the approach of developing multiple means for presenting information, means of expression and practice of knowledge and skills, and strategies for engaging learners.

It is important to be aware that students in an online community need to feel comfortable with the LMS and interacting with classmates and the instructors. This is especially true when students have anything that impairs their learning. Instructors may need to adjust their plan for delivery if they find anyone needs it.

This topic hit home for me. My son has aspergers and while I know this is classified as a disability, we try to ensure that he doesn't see it as one. He is successful in school at this point, but he is 7. As an educator, I try to be open and accessable to ensure that my students attain the necessary information to be successful because I know that not all disabilities are visible. I hope that my son always ends up in a situation like this so he can grow to his full potential.

The big percentage of students with disabilities is definitely eye opening. And to think that many of them having varying disabilities that all need to be addressed in different manners. This gives more importance to clarification and ensuring that all students are on the same page.

indeed It is very difficult to engage students with disabilities. However, getting help from the Consul or advisor We can help to overcome anxiety and any other  disabilities.

Before this course I didnt realize that we needed to consider students with disabilities on the online environment. Going forward I will make sure I take this into account for my students.

I have learned that many students may not be aware of a disaibility and/or will not disclose it to the instructor. I appreciate the idea of formatting information either bold or creating checklists to make the material more clear and accessible.

There are many disabilities that may impact learning, affecting many more than one might realize

While completeng this module I reviewed some of the learning desabilities and the best practices to assist them as online instructors or designers.

I learned that the students with disabilities have more opportunity to study using electronic way to complete the lesson, because have more space in physical locations, space availability and more time to flinish the lessons.

Many learners/students have dissabilities.  Some diagnosed, some not, either way the teaching world must accomodate all students regardless of dissabilities.  Many times working together with a student with a disability gives the instructor and the student opportunities to brainstrom and find ways to overcome any disability.

I appreciate this course taking on the topic of disabilities. Most importantly, not only did it highlight different types, but offered possible solutions instructors can implement to help make their teaching be more accessible to all.

It is so very wonderful that there are so many programs and resources for individuals with disabilities in existence today.

Online Learners with Disabilities

I learned lots from this first module. I did not realize that so much needed to be taken into consideration. When planning learning for persons with disabilities lots of compassion needs to be exercized. The designer and planner has to be aware of visual, hearing, and physical impairments just to name a few.

I intend to apply what I have learned with caution, deliberation, and sensitivity.

The reporting of disabilities is interesting, which means we need to support that there are disabilities when developing and delivering content so it is available to all regardless of their claim.

As someone with a seizure disorder and migraines, I'm so happy to see you had the flashy transition example here. I have too often been made ill at worse or made confused and befuddled at best by this sort of thing. I like that you talked about a huge variety of disorders -- visible and invisible.

This is a great topic to assist all learners. Knowing synchronized activities would be more difficult for the disabled helps apply the three principals more readily to all students. The principles are:

1.) multiple means of presenting information

                                                   2.) expressing and practicing skills

                                                   3.) engaging the students

Hello, there was a couple of disabilities that I did not think about prior to taking the course.
