This type of assessment has been used in a limited capacity in our online setting. There have not been many opportunities for students to perform real-world tasks at the level I currently teach. It is my understanding that as the student progress to the upper level coursework they are asked to demonstrate their knowledge in reviewing case files.

Wow, that really does have to be that type of observation. How would you do this online? (How interesting are the performances?)

I've used performance assessments, as well as observations. One situation involves observing a student perform skills necessary to run a proper radio show. Performance aspects of that include proper hand placement on the audio mixer, proper balance of levels, and smooth transitions from one audio element to the next.

And it makes your grading more consistent. Many of the LMS had rubric generators now that will help you create them.

I have used Rubrics and will consider using them more. They are time-consuming as stated in the lesson. I do find that it gives students a more focused to work towards

With the hybrid graphic design classes (partial online)that I teach (1 days face to face), we have final assignment submissions that are critiqued with the help of a rubric. Before the final submission, we have face to face critiques with class members and desk critiques one on one with the instructor in class. Using a process that has been built up over time ensures that the student learner is going through appropriate checkpoints before he completes his assigned task. The student final portfolio is the last assessment checkpoint that is used.

The online courses that I teach integrate projects that seem like a real-world problem. Thus, the students need to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in solving these projects. Also, I use rubric that focus on measuring the students’ performance.

I agree with you. I also have observed that our traditional students are have the same characteristics of our nontraditional students. They too want to know why they have to learn this. They will no long just do busy work and who blames them.

Yes, it would be. Many internships are done for a grade. At my institution we are implementing a system called co-curricular record. This is where students can record work done that did not have a grade assigned to it. Internships are there as well as leadership, professional development and service learning activities. It is a nice tool to have.
