Lois,
You might use padlet.com as a electronic board that students can use to "show" their work.

Lois,
What a great assignment. That does incorporate authentic learning. It is not just creating the flyer but critical thinking about what goes on that flyer and the process to determine the content. That is real world.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Randy,
We also do something like this, but the students have to research their own newspapers and local journals to find information relevant to their communities health. I use this for discussion questions and it is very interesting. The students get into problem solving based on the information shared.
Lois
Some of the assignments in the online courses are examples of authentic assessment. The one the students just completed was to create a one page flyer to be provided to the public as information on a specific disease process. The assignment incorporated the student learning outcomes and the content (pathophysiology and epidemiology) from the course, but the students had to evaluate their own community for knowledge needs. The flyer had to include everything in a manner that would make the public want to read it and be able to understand it. The flyer seems easy, but actually turns out to be quite the learning experience as well as a good assessment of student knowledge and understanding. These flyers could then be utilized in the students nursing practice location.
Christopher,
True, it is so interesting to see how students apply knowledge and/or skills to their "world". As educators, we do learn from our students through this way and we should let them know that, modeling life-long learning.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
No, I have not had the opportunity to use alternative but I have used authentic. Most of the assessments are student-centered and relate to the students’ real world experiences. I have learned something from each student as well as enjoyed observing each one of them as they progress and learn.
Erina ,
What a great idea. They will see them again! Do you think it helps them apply their learning?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Donielle,
How do you use authentic assessment in the student quizzes? You may want to look at that definition again.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Douglas,
Great use and example of authentic assessment. How rich is the experience for the student!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I have used authentic assessments as a course project to demonstrate all, or substantially all of the learning objectives. For example, when I teach accounting courses, I will have students create a comprehensive set of financial statements.
The authentic assessment is used in our online course by the students quizzes and their discussion questions, in which we can measure their learning and understanding by both.
In the world of Sociology authentic assessment can be applied or completed in the context of a field observation or a participant observation. If you have students complete either of these Sociological research processes you are also completing an authentic assessment. I have used these in a number of different Sociology and research courses over the years. Having students conduct observations can be an interesting learning tool. For example the student can conduct a participant observation project by doing a social norm violation assignment. An example of this would be getting into an elevator and facing the back wall. The student completes this step a number of times and then writes about their experience in the elevator. That would be a solid example of authentic assessment.
Edward,
Discussions like this teaches students to use knowledge to deal with experiences instead of reacting to a situation. This is so important to learning how ot use their knowledge and skills. Nice job.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Stephanie,
Discussions can be such an effective way to assess student learning. I think it it is the secret weapon in online learning!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Stephanie,
I love case studies. You can do so much with them in both types of deliveries. I like a suggestion made on another forum. Tie it all together with your students using the discussion.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Stephanie,
What a great way to utilize discussion. You have really made discussions meaningful and connected to both the content and the real world. That takes work. Kudos to you.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Jacqueline,
How cool is that! How lucky are your students for going through assessments such as this. They will be ready for the real world with both knowledge of content and the skill to apply.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
David,
True, in IT that is a good fit. I have also used projects and measured their project management also. Authentic Assessment is so important for an IT major.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Jennifer,
What a great idea. That is authentic assessment! Students are taught how to respond to these types of assessments. Hang in there.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Nicholas,
You will have your time. The important thing is that you are thinking about different types of assessment to improve student learning.
