Paul,
I am so glad you discussed digital portfolios! I think it is an excellent way for students to determine what is their good work. I love your post.

Kenya,
Maybe try case studies where students have to observe certain behavior. You may want to use Youtube clips or just text case studies.

Jennifer,
I agree for business subjects, you must use the real world. I teaching business writing, they have to write and it has to be in a business scenario.

Jennifer,
I think you are doing a great job of getting real experiences. We have to tie it to the real world somehow!

Dr. Glenn ,
I LOVE your answer! You said student centered and we can't lose focus of that. Do you teach your students the Socratic method? I don't think they really know about it.

Francis ,
This is a great way to use discussion boards. I think we don't think of discussion board this way!

Where I teach the assignments and evaluations are created for the instructor. Authemtic assessment occurs on the Discussion Board, where the students apply their weekly readings to a real-world scenario. The Students tend to become quite engaged in these discussions not only because they are interesting but they often relate to their own workplace, which helps them to retain the knowledge gained in the course.
We use performance quite a bit. The students will teach exercises- visually demonstrate and then verbally explain how to do the exercise. We also have the students train each other- in a breakout room they will have their mics and cameras and and take each other through exercises. This help us properly assess the students application of the knowledge.
Teaching environmental science I am able to use case studies all the time. It is a field that is very much in mainstream consciousness and there is always something new to talk about.
The main authentic assessment used in my online program is the digital portfolio. Students will periodically throughout the program be required to pull together their work and present it in a digital portfolio that shows their work in various areas (i.e., photography, web design, print design, etc). On a side note, this is for me personally the most difficult aspect of student work to grade. You have to be careful not to crush a students hopes and dreams when their portfolios are not up-to-snuff. I tend to approach this by asking students to review some portfolios online and compare and contrast those portfolios with their own. I tell them to be specific and to compare and contrast some of the design devices used in their own work with those used in the design portfolios they find online. The results can be enlightening for students because they get to identify their own drawbacks. And the method is useful because it is the student having the epiphany without being "critiqued," which can create an antagonistic relationship.
This is a great idea! I am going to try to incorporate this in my classroom.
I facilitate a Sociology class online and I don't currently use authentic assessments in my classroom. I would like any suggests on how I can incorporate this into my classroom.
As a business student it was very case study heavy, which is similar to a lawyer referring back to cases and lessons learned. When you don't have any good business experience, this is helpful to learn from other scenarios.
Authentic assessments include portfolios, performance, and observations. How have you used authentic assessment in your online course?
I don't feel like I have been able to do this much due to the restrictions my school has onthe content. However, I have been able to bring in real scenarios from their work experience to apply to some of the discussion forums. For example, they must evaluate thier own home's chemical usage and evaluate storage and disposal.
Trude,
I think I would agree with your second best approach. We have to be as current as much as we can. This is an attribute case studies that were written such a long time ago, would not have.
I have used many forms of authentic assessment in online instruction. I believe that instructors that focus on active learning as a means to determine the learning progress motivate the student towards actively questioning their understanding of the process as opposed to just getting it right. Another aspect to student centered learning is relevant use of assessment tools that become interactive learning tools with authentic assessment. These tools contribute to and motivate students to participate. My classroom experience with using online testing as a learning tool empowered student’s engagement. The motivation for interest did not always originate with the student’s genuine interest in learning the subject as much as debating for a higher grade. Either way the student’s involvement ramped up the learning through experience of the subject from an active learning process and Socratic discussion in the asynchronous practice.
I haven't really thought about it that way, but I have used them. In each class that I teach, we have discussion forums and in these forums, the students get a chance to share their thoughts and experiences regarding a particular subject. It isn't usually a simple recitation of fact; it is how that fact relates to them and their lives. It is an invaluable tool to help students learn from one another.
Jolly,
Well stated. This should be evident in any behavioral interview. Your students will be ready!

BRIGITTE ,
I like that you make use of technology to provide tools to ensure good authentic assessment.

Trista,
Interesting. . . In many programs that are tied to occupations, this will make it much easier to develop.
