Hi Diana,
Rubrics make a huge difference in the way that students complete their work because with a rubrics we are breaking down the task to show what is required and how points will be allocated.
Patricia
It is important to give the students the breakdown of the assignment and how they will be graded so that they know up front and hopefully this will help them to make sure that they complete the work according to the rubrics so that they can receive a good score.
If we do not provide rubrics I think we are setting the students up for failure.
Patricia
BRIGITTE ,
Super. Glad you are using rubrics and see the benefit for you and students. Thanks for your input.
Hello
I teach in the field of History as an online faculty. I find that rubrics are part of my best tools. The rubrics gives the student an oppertunity to review how they will be graded and this way, students are able to go back and review the course objectives they will need to perform the assignment. A well written rubric will assess the student on the cometency goals for the course accroding to the standard course of study.
Marie,
Glad you are finding interesting conversations in these forums. We learn so much from each other. Also glad you see the benefits to using rubrics - benefits for the students and yourself.
I find the conversation about the Rubrics very interesting. In my current class I had a student ask me a question about my rubric that I created a while ago and it was very clear to me that I need to revamp it big time! We just changed editions of the text and I am taking this opportunity to redo the assignments as well as the rubric to really enhance the students learning. I am finding that the students are a little confused.
Great stuff! Thanks.
Jenifer,
How can that not be a good thing! Speed and consistency. Thanks!
You are right on target.
It can actually speed up the assessment process AND ensure more consistent grading.
Paula,
Good point. It may help students understand more clearly and define those necessary expectations. Thanks for your input.
Task-specific rubrics provide the students with define performances that are expected. It may remove some of the challenges of the assignment by clearly defining the expectations.
Kara,
Yes and keep in mind rubrics help the instructor too. They take the subjectivity out of assessment and provide for more consistency. Thanks for your input.
Rubrics help students to better understand what to include in an assignment. When a student has a rubric to look at, it helps them to know what they need to do for that assignment. It also helps them to better understand the feedback given by their instructor.
Mark,
Definitely. Rubrics help students and the instructors using them. Thanks for your input.
I have found that it takes some of the subjectivity of grading out of the question. It gives the student the feedback of exactly how their grade was determined. I also think it avoids some grade disputes
Claudia ,
Thanks so much. I'm glad you learned something that will be beficial to you and your students.
Claudia ,
Good term" "walk-through tool." That's a great way to describe rubrics. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Claudia ,
There are various uses for different types of rubrics. Find what works for you and your students and go for it!
Thanks!
Just a comment here. . I really enjoyed this lesson on creating rubrics, their importance and so forth! I am excited to start creating if provided the opportunity!
The use of rubrics to clarify what is important and help the students to reach their learning objectives for the sssignment. It is sort of providing the students with a a "walk-through" tool. Many students don't know or don't bother to check their grading comments, despite multiple communications to do so. I take a lot of time with my comments and I want the students to know its importance.
I really like that idea of creating a task-specific rubric!
