Understanding the difference between writing and texting

Recently I have noticed that a few of my students have been using text formats in their threaded discussions. I have a zero tolerance rule for text format in any assignment student complete. Am I too harsh? What say you???

I believe that writing is just that. Use complete sentences. Make sure it is grammatically correct and spelling is checked. Writing skills reflect who you are. Texting, on the other hand, is sending information via phone or email quickly. There are mistakes shortcuts with words and emoticons. Unfortunately, a lot of these techniques spill over to the writing skills.

Students need to know the difference in writing and texting. Writing is our fundamental way of communicating; it enhances one's power of creativity. One must know how to spell and punctuate correctly for a professional word. Rarely would one receive a PHD texting.

what about the boss texting instructions instead of email it to us?

I think that students need to be instructed on the proper forms of writing, which are specific to the situation. When communicating to an instructor, a student should write in a professional manner and save the text lingo for casual correspondence in a text box.

It is very frustrating to read a a well written essay only to find "i" and "u" in the last few paragraphs.

Students should write not text when communicating with an instructor. This will allow for correct grammar and dialogue.

I think you are right. Keep them practice writing in good habits.

This is an interesting problem I catch myself doing it as a form of shorthand that only I will review. often times during these courses I do it. If the students are making self notes I am fine but in formal discussions it should be formal writing.
