The Virtual Team Coach
Would you manage or coach a virtual team the same as if team members were physically present? Please explain.
Definitely not. Although many aspects of team guidance would remain the same, such as starting the team off with a team-building meeting, ensuring that there is clarity as to teammates' roles and responsibilities, as well as expectations, and a clear goal plan, there are also many differences.
Virtual teams must be more closely manages because the management does not occur naturally, as in an office environment. The team leader does not see what team members are working on every hour of the work day. To overcome this challenge, it is important to set up communication protocols, regularly scheduled update meetings, and clear deadlines for specific tasks.
kevin,
I agree with you on this statement. That daily interaction is missing & so a virtual team takes much more intentionality in our work with them.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Not necessarily,
A virtual team may take more encouragement especially if working from home with out the interactions of other team members. As a manager or coach you do not have the luxury of seeing or reading the body language .
