Recruiting and Enhancing Diverse Talent
What methods have you employed, or would you employ, to recruit diverse talent for your career school team? How would you foster an inclusive team environment so that such talent would be nurtured?
Timothy,
this is a great example of evaluating the person who is the best fit & tapping into strengths.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
My school had an opening for an A&P Instructor.
Since I am an Instructor as well and I will be working with the new hire, the school asked me for a recommendation, if I had any.
I recommended my former Instructor, an African American.
After three interviews, Management I and the other instructors, decided that he was a good fit.
Shelly,
yes, I really like the idea of different rounds of interviews & having team members participate. Actually one of my jobs came because of the team interview. For whatever reason I didn't impress the management that much but the team members felt strongly about me so management gave me another chance & I got the job. After all, it is the team members who will be working with the employee.

Getting to know potential employ is very important. Every employee needs to be a good fit into the company. During the interview process, you can tell how an employee will fit with the others. Often we have had a second or third interveiw with the team the employee will be working with. This is a nice tactic.
I have had great success with employee referrals in the past and believe listening as well as positive praise is the key to developing a nurturing team environment.
