Should Feedback be Negative....NO!
I would be interested to hear the case for 'banning' the word NEGATIVE when giving or dicussing feedback, In my view, feedback should either be positve of constructive, the latter used to correct behaviour. Welcome thoughts?

Kim,
and I think as long we understand that this means I am giving them things to work on & not just praising what's going well we're in good shape.

I do not like to use Negative when giving feedback or discussing feedback. When providing feedack, I prefer to use "Areas of Opportunity", "focused areas" or "Areas of improvement" to keep it as positive as possible.
HERMAN,
it really is important that we help our "coaches" to see these growth areas as opportunities to improve & help.

Ian,
I agree with the term "Area of Opportunity" because you want your coachee to buy into your concept on ways he/she can become more productive to the team and grow as a person.
I agree, to an extent. Sometimes to much positive constructive feedback may not get the job done. Some types of individuals need to have that extra push to get them where they should be. I personally prefer constructive and positive criticism because i feel my student or trainee needs that strong backing.
Ian,
this is so true & that careful use of phrasing or words can help to get the person on board with us & give us greater opportunities.

"Area of opportunity" is an excellent choice. As leaders/coaches, we need to become architects of language, and it's amazing how one word, whether intentional or not, can affect the coachee's reaction to the entire mentoring process.
Antonio,
yes, any phrases we can use that stear away from the negative concept are helpful.

When giving feedback to an employee I do not use the word "negative". I use the phrase "area of oppurtunity". When using this, the employee tends not to become defensive and welcomes the feedback.
I think the use of the word negative should be band I use the word conctructive or say that this feed back is to help improve about the areas you need to focus on improving or that are challanging.
Using the word Negative is not contructve in trying help some improve in their job perfomance.
