Trinidad ,
these are all great & key things to remember & especially remembering the goal or point. Drive that home throughout the presentation.

What do you believe are the top three or four things to remember when preparing and delivering an effective presentation?
I believe that the top three or four things to remember when preparing and delivering an effective presentation are:
1. Keep in mind what is the goal of the presentation. What are you trying to communicate and what is the outcome that you are looking for?
2. Who are you talking to? What is the demographic that you are trying to reach? What is the audience and what is the mindset of the people who you are talking to.
3. What is the take-away messages that you want your audience to think about or remember about the presentation
4. How can you best communicate the information in a way that will be memorable and meaningful
Gale,
This is all good prep & I would add to consider the different classes/audiences too.

I am a new instructor, when I prep for class
*I read the Chapter and
*review the tests that have been given to me.
*I also take the tests and do the homework
*I present based on the topics on the test(s) homework
*as well as topics I know they will encounter in another class or life.
*and think about questions they might have based on how much they know about the subject.
Carol,
These are three of the most important items to remember in speech preparation .
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
I think confidence is the primary most important aspect of any presentation. It makes the audience listen to you if they are feeling you know what you are talking about
Know your material......I find that if you are confortable with your topic, and follow the basic rules of presentation, you will be a good presenter.
Russell,
yes, while we will always be a little nervous & that helps with energy, the more relaxed we can be, the better we will communicate with our audience.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Maria,
audience analysis is so key, as I might have great content, but if I deliver it in a way that is ineffective for this audience, I loose.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
The three things to remember are: know your content; prepare for the presentation; and very importantly engage your audience. If you're not relaxed as well as prepared, your audience won't be able to relax and focus on your content.
Knowing your audience is an essential element in preparing for a presentation. It is also vital that one has a clear idea of the purpose of the presentation. Prepare in depth and lastly keep it simple and as engaging as possible.
heidi,
and I would say to articulate your objectives to your audience is key as well

Michael,
short answer is yes, it can detract. I think you have to gauge your audience & the topic. Personally, I'm not a big fan of hardly any animation at all, but it can be effectively used, but definitely think minimalist.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
I have a question - how much animiation should you use in a presentation ? Can tooooo much detract from your presentation ?
Be prepared, practice, move about to involve everyone, be engaging and keep thing interesting. Enjoy what you are doing it will show in your presintation.
Paul,
this is why I highly recommend arriving at your presentation destination well in advance so you are not rushed & flustered.
