Feedback for students

When I first began teaching, and the students where given the opportunity to "grade" their instructors, the one comment I received most often was that I didn't give enough feedback. And after taking this course I realize that I didn't really know how to give feedback in a teacher-student scenario. I have gotten much better at providing them feed back, but this course has taught me how to formulate it better based upon what type of student (i.e thinker, socializer, etc) and based upon the desired outcome. I believe now I will be more effective with providing them feedback and leading them into becoming much better/educated students.

This is a terrific topic for instructors and your comments have assisted me with seeing where the disconnect has been. When students are given the opportunity to critique their instructors it is not unusual to score them low on receiving feedback. Most instructors feel that they do give students feedback in the form of grades on assessments and that to them is sufficient. But to the student that is just their grade and has nothing to do with feedback. Many students need that extra pat on the back and something called constructive criticism instead of destructive criticism.

I have found the same issue when coaching my instructors they really don’t know how to give feedback. Most of them just deliver the information but can’t relate to the feedback part. What they deliver is taken as criticism which is negative and this creates a problem in the classroom. I now have different tools to offer them and possibly give them insight on giving useful feedback.
