Set an example
Managers should always set the example for their employees! The way they operate in a work setting is observed an often times repeated by their employees, whether positive or negative behavior. Be a leader by setting a good example to your employees in everything you do!!
This is so very true. From the perspective of an employee, when I have had past supervisors who claim a policy isn't important or isn't worthwhile, I certainly haven't taken it seriously. On the other hand, when a manager has been excited about and stressed importance of policy, I've been much more willing to follow and do a great job. This is a good reminder for me now as a supervisor.
I think you have to be the bigger person and set the example if not just for your employees sake but for your peers as well.
But how can you set an example when other managers (equal to you) do all the negative things discussed, and you don't?
All managers should set an example so matter how big or small the company is.
This is especially true over the course of time. When managers are inconsistent, and over time fall into bad habits, it becomes part of the fabric of the business. Employee's see this and have little respect for the manager or the rules of the company. The manager is the example employees will follow.
