LOOKING AT GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, WITH NO PARTICULAR GOAL IN MIND, OTHER THAN A CHANGE. THERE ARE NO OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AT MY PRESENT JOB THAT CURRENTLY INTEREST ME, SO I'M LOOKING TO IMPROVE MY SKILLS TO BETTER PLACE MYSELF IN THE JOB MARKET. CAN A CAREER COUNSELOR HELP WITH THAT?
One of the most important things to remember about using a career counselor is the time and money involved. If it's internal to your current company, then the risk is very small.
James,
yes, sometimes just talking it through with a trusted advisor, mentor, or friend is a great way to clarify our thoughts & make good decisions.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Of course. They can ask you the correct questions that can help you to decide on a career path. You may not realy know what you want but talking to them will clarify your goals.
Tawny,
this is great advice on seeking help. And I do think the key is to "begin with the end in mind" as Covey said. Where do I want to go & now how do I get there?
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Yes we can help you. We are Career Advisors and what we believe in is assisting our students develop a goal sheet. Where do they want to be and work backwards. When you have a goal in mind it is much easier to see the steps you need to take and work towards the goal. A Career Advisor is your go to person to find out about you. What suggestions do they have for you? How can they direct you?
You are right. I highly recommend folks take advantage of these services whenever possible.
Ryan
Most community employment services have on-site career counselors available for free. With the economy the way that it is these services are a blessing.
Yes and then helping them to learn where & how they can gain that knowledge & those connections is vital too.
Ryan
So true. I myself am a mentor in my feild. I continuly encourage my mentees to strive for more knowledge and continued communication in our network. This will help them also to be prosperous and have a happy future.
Yes, career counselors or trusted mentors & friends can all help ask these probing questions to help you discover the right path for you.
Ryan
I agree. They really will get the student to think about what matters in a job and guide them to the right choice. They will help any way they can. Even if it is through mentors, externship placement, or employer interviews.
The carer counselors can truly help. They will discuss your interests and ask what may seem like personal questions but it is all a way to help develop an educational path to your goal. That leads them to the final stage getting you to that new career. A happier and prosperous future.
Stephen,
Definitely a career counselor could help you, assuming they are good at what they do. What you want to discuss is what most interests you, what's viable as far as careers that are growing, hiring, etc. These are the types of questions a good career counselor can help you consider.
