Taking it in stride.
Stress is a part of everyday life for an executive. We learn to deal with it from day one. The key is to be in control of every aspect of the operation if possible. When I stay ahead of the curve then stress is much easier to deal with just because you have time to analyze it and produce a viable solution if possible.
No plan then no action....no action then no victory. I like to plan out as many things as possible, I never like to wonder "What should I do now?". I like to take care of things I don't want to do first so they are out of the way and I don't have to waste energy thinking about them any more. I share these ideas with my students. The fact is that life is not perfect and obstacles come up everyday. This is especially true when you are dealing with lots of individuals. I do my best to breathe take it stride and remember this to shall pass.
I think the key here is staying ahead of the curve. When we procrastinate or let projects linger till the last minute, our stress levels will rise. It is somewhat self-inflicted. We know the deadline is coming, yet we put off those things that could be done now. We find other things to do that are easier to accomplish and push the more difficult activities back. Ultimately, it catches up with you. However, when you are ahead of the curve, you are in control. This gives you the opportunity to take a step back, look at the issues and make rational, meaningful decisions.
Positive stress is a catalyst for success. The energy that is generated helps us to meet goals. Without positive stress, nothing would happen because there would be no energy to move forward. When all the elements for success -information, resources, energy and enthusiasm, and a support team - are present, you can meet the demands.
I am working on one day at a time doing what I know how to do and what I do best first. I have learn how to ask for help when I need it. This has been a great eye opener for me.
I agree that stress is an everyday occurrence. It depends on how we perceive each situation and understand if it is something that we can control or not. I work in the healthcare field with neonates and pediatrics. Stress at times makes it hard differentiate treating the patient or pleasing the parents. I also work as an educator. I instruct & educate 50 students in a set class room with different personalities. I find it hard as well as stressful to please and find a learning pattern for all of them. When I am able to have study groups for my class it makes it easier to deal with any negitive or unplnned stress.
I understand what you mean, Eric. Stress IS part of the daily life of an executive or manager. I think, though, it is quite difficult to be in control of every aspect of the operation. Some things are just out of our control - I guess, actually, depending on your position and where you work. Staying ahead of the curve definitely helps!! Thanks for sharing your ideas!
