Show me the money
At the end of the day, aren't the very top goals of all for-profit firms connected to financial performance... be it revenue, improvement on revenue, earnings, etc? Is that a bad thing?
I do agree that for profit centers are aimed at money. It is unfortunate that even though we have great classes like these. If I were to approach what I learned in this class to my corporate office, more than half would not be considered and dismisses as not being part of the "real world". This is a challenge for all business today.
Robert,
You make a great point & one that needs to be kept in mind. First of all, I would say, no this is not a bad thing, especially as it is the foundation of our economic system.
I think the concern comes in when financial goals take precedence over ethical & human aspects (sadly we have many recent examples of this). In regard to goals, I think the job here is for managers/leaders to be able to translate these overarching goals down to inidividual unit & even personal goals for the individual employee. To me one important job of the leader is to help each employee understand how what they do on a daily basis connects to those seemingly really large, profit goals. When this happens, people are generally more engaged & enthused.
