Using the SMART tool
This discussion really helped me realize how important it is to clearly define what your goals are and how to accomplish them. Any suggestions on how to do this and be successful at it?
I agree, it is very helpful in seeing the importance of setting goals.
Christie,
Yes it can be used in a variety of situations.

The SMART tool applies and is helpful when teaching nursing students how to assess their clients and then complete the CPF in their nursing care plan.
Great idea! I'd never thought of this before, however I will place this in my tool bag
Ellen,
glad the info was helpful. The beauty of SMART goals (to me) is that they are so easy to understand & implement.

yes these are great tools. I am familiar with smart goals from a previous position. However, I recently took a new position and had forgotten about them. This reminder is right on time because we are establishing goals and making changes. I will begin to use the smart goals critera immediatley. I know it will be a benefit to us. I also believe the staff will have greater clarity regarding expections, that alone can improve the possiblity of success.
Audrey,
this is a great example of the work place use of these tools.

Nurses use SMART goals to define patient outcomes. It also makes us constantly re-evaluate the goals to see if they are realistic towards what we hope to achieve.
John,
good question. One thing I would suggest is to get an "accountability partner." Have someone else read your goals & make sure they are clear & define & "SMART" & then ask that person to ask you periodically how things are going & how you are doing.
