Take time alone and breathe
A lot of times at work, I am constantly around people especially since my office is in a student lab. Sometimes when I am filling like I can't stand to hear another word from someone, I go to the bathroom or my car and just close my eyes and concentrate on just breathing for a minute or two. It does wonders for me.
You are correct when you observed managers can pass their stress on to there employees. I had the experience of a great leader when our company was raided by the federal government. His demeanor was calm and collected and gave all of us assurance we had done nothing wrong. He laid out the days ahead of us and how we were going to respond. It is without question this attitude lowered the anxiety that existed with the employees. My point is that it can work both ways. It can raise anxiety or lower depending on the talent of the manager.
I agree. A lot of managers many times have the habit of not taking any time off; no lunch break or a day off. Once in a while, we all need a little break. Just a few minutes will do miracles! Especially when we have a huge responsibility of making sure that the company is running smooth. Many managers unfortunately do not realize that they are passing their stress around to all the employees and this could be very negative for the productivity of the organization.
CYNTHIA,
All of us need to be able to take some steps back at sometimes. When we do this we can get a clear thought process going on with our direction.

I agree. I believe that if given the chance to just take 10-15 minutes to regroup makes a difference. Take the time out to breath, take a quick walk, or just go to the car maybe and listen to the radio. I find that that works wonders for me.
We all have our escapes. If it works for you then it is the place to be.
Hi Casey, I do the same thing too! Often times working at a college can be very stressful and busy and hard to find a quiet moment alone. The bathroom is a great place to take a breather and to be alone for a moment! Amen for private bathrooms!!!
Focus is always the key. When it is lost all sorts of bad things can happen. Knowing when this has happened is the first step to regaining the focus. Your exercise is one that works for you. It is good you know this helps.
It seems as though the physical class-room size doesn't change, but the number of students does. I sometimes like to take a "mini-mental" break and go sit quietly in an empty classroom just so I can begin to refocus.
Great practice, you create a balance in your life when you create for youself a balance. Good practice in healthy activity helps to meet with challenges.
I try at least twice a day to stop, relax and breath. I find that slowly inhaling and imagining the " bad stressed breath" leaving my body. I feel much better after a few exercises. I hope some of you will try this and cocentrate onthe breathing inhale good air and exhale bad air out.
Stress is a matter of perspective. Crisis situations obviously keeps us in a state of emotion. If you can step back and weigh the stress event and put it into a proper priority and deal if it works accordingly.Other activities such as removing from the stress such as exercise, reading for taking a walk can reduce stress. Remove yourself from the moment.
That sounds fantastic. I am a person who wishes he could do this. Do you have any tips on how a stressed person like me can relax and let everything else melt away for a few minutes?
Somtimes we need to express ourselves but there seems to be no place to do it. You appear to have found a spot. The only caution is if you spend to much time in your car screaming.
I sometimes go to my car and blast the music and scream in the parking lot. It helps!
I use deep breathing all the time. At night before going to bed I breath slow and I’m sleeping in 2 minutes. Any time there is stress and take time and go to my office and take deep breath and slow down, I get a fast response from my body and can continue working.
We all need a time out now and then. As a communicator it is strategic to be able to move in a direction to have some control of the direction a conversation is going. When you realize your own potential to lead a positive outcome for you and your staff there will be less need for time outs.
