Treadmill

Difficult students, train delays, traffic, juggling two jobs, family conflicts, bills - these are just some of the stress factors that I deal with daily living in New York city. I've been dealing with these for over 10 years but I am able to cope. I find that getting on the treadmill (3-5 times a week for 30 minutes)helps me get a handle on all of these contributors. I also find that separating the weekly grind by taking time out during Saturdays and Sundays helps me. I make sure that these two days are devoted to things that I love to do most like working in the garage, dinner with my wife and son, movies or just plainly relaxing at home watching tv or reading a book. Also I discovered that proscrastinating doesn't help and daily planning is very useful.

Ken,

You have discovered the value of mental rest. Along with some physical exercise and mental attitude creates the platform to deal with stress.

I have tried the treadmill but due to back injuries it makes it hard to do. I have instead weather permiting try to ride my bicycle to differant areas and look at houses trees gardens flowers etc which gives me a good calming effect

You have really captured some of what I call a balanced life. When you can enjoy exercise, mental rest and spiritual rejuvenation you can face the problems ahead. Good for you!

I took up running for almost the exact same reasons that you described. I also give myself a "technology free" day each Sunday - no computer, cell phone, etc... I really take that time to connect with my family and find that I look forward to my Sundays "off!"

You have discovered the balance that is needed to meet stress head on for success. Physical activity, rest, mental regeneration and spiritual rejuvenation all helps to face the challenges.

Good for you!
