Patrick,

Stress is why some nights I seem tired when there hasn't been any real physical stress. It is always a good practice to have those moments of stepping back and regaining your strength for the challenge at hand. We all have our practices that work best for us. Walking, reading, short break, visit with others about something other than work etc. can keep us motivated to finish the challengss of the day.

Dr. Gary Carlson

The good stress still wears me down if it comes to rapidly without a break in between.

Thanks for your response. I think if we handle stress in a way that the outcome is good for us, it becomes a good stress. If we just give up and let it ruin our life, it becomes a bad stress.

musharaf,

There is good and bad stress. We should know what to do in case of bad stress. Mental health, exercise, leisure and spiritual rejuvenation helps combat bad stress.

Stress is good if it motivates somebody to perform well under pressure.I personally believe that we can't achieve any goal in life without taking stress. Stress boosts our energy level to accomplish a task or achieve a goal. But problem starts when we stress overcomes our senses and knocks us down to the level where we our outcomes becomes minimal. We need to keep our nerves intact in a stressful situation, get help from our freinds and family, talk to ourself and try to find a way out. I can assure there is always a way out, we needs patience and trust on ourself.Drugs can help us to a certain extent but they got serious side effects too.
Like Prozac which is most commonly used drug for stress and depression in the U.S, it increases siucidal thought and tendency in the patients. So it is not solution of teh problem. Solution is in our hands, not in the drugs. We spend billions of dollars on these antianxiety drugs every years rather using simple measure to overcome this human made problem. I think we are cause of stress for each other. we neeed to breach this cycle at some point. Let everybody work properly and enjoy their life, so we all can enjoy this God given opportunity of life.

kervens,
It is wonderful you have the self-dicipline to move away for a moment. People who are on prescription drugs need to be carefully guided and monitored. The best therapy is to teach people how to contend with stress in a healthy manner.

I dunno if bad stress requires Prozak. It usually requires the individual to take a moment to really detach from the situation(s) and think objectively. I'd have to say even in my most stressful situations in the classroom or outside of it it's beneficial for me to just step away from it all in order to just THINK. Then I can devise the best solution or method to alleviate the STRESS..

Nathan, I am glad you brought this up, as I was having the same thoughts. I tend to handle "emergent" stressors better, but sometimes do not realize when other stressors have gradually hit me.

Nathan,

What a perfect world it would be if we could anticipate stress but sometimes we know that is impossible. The best solution is organization and crisis management by always being prepared for plan "B". As we organize ourselves we often are stressed when this structure is tampered with by unknowns. My father was an army veteran through war and peace and he always mentioned the stress of combat but became a lover of the saying of "The sun will still come up tomorrow". I believe how we handle stress is the perspective to the incident at hand. Calm heads with logical decisions can be the best practice.

I once worked for a company that on one given day we were raided by US Govt. We had eighteen months of stress but in the end I was extremely impressed and proud of the leadership we had as we faced such a huge challenge. The logic won out!

It seems difficult in assessing the threshold for where a healthy amount of stress begins to turn toxic. How do you really know when you've turned the corner?

In the lesson, it says if we are experiencing a sense of well-being and productivity, then it is healthy stress. However, I always feel good until I have an unforeseen stress emergency. If I have a really bad stressed day three days out of five, does that make my stress toxic?

It just seems like there should be a more precise and objective way of determining the boundaries of healthy stress than my particular disposition at the moment. What do you think?

You are correct it takes some work. The key is your balance in life. Exercise, mental activity, leisure and spiritual rejuvenation assists you in balance.

Good stress keeps you motivated, bad stress requires Prozak.

There is good and bad stress. You are correct when concluding stress can be good. We all feel better when we are motivated by something or someone. We aspire for challenges. Not all of us have the same needs for inspiration but we need to have something to motivate us.
