Letting Go of Resistance to Change = Stress Reduction for Me

I have learned that the greatest source of stress seems to be when I had been resistant to change.

Particularly when implementing new policies, new methods of documentation, new student/class assignments... if I took the deep breaths and observed the root of most of the stress... in tended to be a resistance in going with the flow.

Agnes,
Changes often need pilot starts to work out any glitches that may within the change. This doesn't eliminate the change but does gives you champions to the implementation. Change is necessary in today's world. Our generations have changed and their learning process has been changed. Our ability to adapt to the generation now is the ability to explain, implement and followup with the changes coming and in place.

Learning to deal with change is essential in stress management. There are many people that tend to be resistant to change, and this causes extra stress not only to them, but their co-workers as well.
I think managers need to know how to make the changes. Not always can they be made gradually, but I think clear information about upcoming changes helps. Employees know what to expect, and then the changes are being introduced. Support feedback is needed in case someone needs assistance with new policies or procedures, or simply needs clarification. Making sure the change is being implemented and reinforced is important.
Follow up is key. So, changes can be stressful, but if they are necessary, I think both managers and employees need to learn how to handle them to minimize stress.

I actually use this. I have things in my office that tell jokes and sing songs that make me laugh to relieve anxiety at my desk.

Nancy ,

You have mentioned a very good point and not to forget people respond when they have some ownership in the process and change. We all don't respond well to change that is thrust upon us without our part on the team.

I agree about resistance to change. Alot of us are like that. However, if we remain openminded, sometimes after it is all said and done, we can see how the change, whatever it was, made our daily lives less stressful.

Mark,

Good for you! This attitude fits well with our society with the high expectations for performance. Your approach will keep on the list of high achieves.

Gary,
Having changed professions numerous times over the last 30 years, I've come to accept a constantly changing workplace, setting, and types of responsibilities. Viewing change as inevitable, has greatly served to reduce my anxiety and apprehension about it when it occurs, where anticipated or not. With the knowledge that seeing change as a challenge instead of taking a defeatist attitude towards it, I've learned to rechannel the worry into more productive methods of coping and transitioning.
