I really like the response that both the leadership and management skills compliment each other. I have seen where management has helped the leadership and vice versa. I truly believe that most managers have some leadership skills even though they don't look at it that way. Working hand in hand sometimes can be misleading but in a good way.

Alan,
Great point. Thank you for sharing in the forum.

Alan,
Thank you for sharing. We believe in any organization both leading and managing go hand in hand. Excellent point to make about keeping up skills. Great job!

I agree with your insights also, Brian. Without one the other cannot be successful. Creating that path forward will go nowhere if the procedural necessity to achieve that path is not present.

I agree that in a smaller organization a person needs to be both a good leader as well as a good manager. It is hard sometimes to know when to be "the good manager" or when to be "the good leader". Keeping up with your skills would aid in facilitating with the correct skill at the correct time.

Joseph,
Great examples! Thank you for sharing!

I don't see how you can place a greater significance on management or leadership other than basing it on the scenario or situation at hand. There will be times when a project will call for a managerial mindset or times when a business may be in a stage of it's life cycle where leadership skills are the greater need. Throughout my career in the military and law enforcement, it has been my experience that the most respected and admired leaders possessed both traits and used them interchangeably as the situation dictated. It's great to have a SWAT Team sergeant who is a "manager" drawing up plans on how the search warrant is supposed to go down, but once the gunfire starts and the plans fall apart, the team will be looking for a "leader" in order to get them out of harms way. I know this is a little outside of the realm of office work, but just an example of how being both a manager and leader is important.

Rita,
It's great that you have had the experience of working with someone that demonstrates both management and leadership qualities. Have you noticed any patterns in how they choose whether to be a leader or manager? In other words, are there specific instances when they use skills in one area or the other?

Dr. Jean Norris

Rita,
Yes indeed! How does one build their skills to be proficient as both a manager and a leader then?

Dr. Jean Norris

Yes I do think an organization needs both and I do believe that a single individual can be great at both. I have worked with individuals that have had great control of managing and leading individuals and keeping everything on task.

I do think that one needs both manager and leadership skills. One my have greater skills in one or the other but, when you put the skills together one is much better at what they are managing or leading.

They do go hand in hand don't they Alonzo? Would you say you are a stronger leader or manager?

Dr. Jean Norris

It's great when we have leader-manager types on our team! Thank you for your post Bonita.

Dr. Jean Norris

Ibelieve you must be a good leader in order to be able to manager. As a leader you get your subordinates to follow you or get them to do what you want them to. As a manager, if you have good leaders, they will get done what you want them to. If yiu are not a good leader, you will not be a good manager

It is more beneficial to be a leader-manager. n individual who has the ability to be an effective leader can often manage the task at hand simply because this type of individual usually has the following of a good team.

That's true Pamela, a person can absolutely have both qualities. Would you say you lean more toward being a leader or a manager?

Dr. Jean Norris

I don't believe being a leader is more important than being a manager. What is important is understanding the role that fits you best and succeeding at it. I do believe a well-rounded person can have the skill set to be both a leader and a manager.

You bet! How do you know when to be the leader and when to be a manager?

Dr. Jean Norris

I feel that both roles are important. In some cases you need to be able to do both. In Admissions you have to be able to lead your team as well as manage your team.
