National versus Regional Accreditation
What is the difference between national and regional accreditation and is there a preference of one over the other?
Jeannie,
Your post has explained the difference between regionally and nationally accrediting bodies. For an in- depth explanation and further I for action on accreditation, check out the U.S.D.O.E.website.

Both Nationaly and Regionally Accredited institutions are recognized by CHEA. The difference is the standards by which they are held. Most people who wish to attend a regionally accredited school for post-graduate work are required to have an undergraduate degree from an insitution that is also regionally accredited, but not always. Typically Nationally Accredited schools will be more specialized in their degree programs.
John,
The regionals are under the CHEA grouping and include SACS, HLC and others. The national accrediting are ACCSC, ACICS and others. Check out the U.S.D.O.E. Website for an in-depth discussion about accreditation.
