Discrimination
When you as an admissions agent feel that the student is not a good fit for the program and you are sure that the student will fail if he/she attends: How can that be relayed to the student without the student feeling discriminated against?
Zainab,
Every candidate, every time. Qualifying criteria are set for a reason and provide a fair playing field.

I think this is an excellent mindset. We are really are in no position to judge and should provide the same level of service to every candidate. Qualifying criteria should be left to the entrance tests, GPA, and meetign other admissions requirements.
Isabelle,
Keywords are important and the more we use them the more it becomes ingrained in the student experience.
Patty Aronoff
Great advise on keywords ... I've started using them when trying to help our foreign students make a good fit in their future academic career ... it has minimized the sense of "favoritism"/discrimination and keeps them open-minded to other programs offered at our institution ...
douglas,
Negative words are the equivalent of closing the door of opportunity for some. Finding positives are the best way to redirect.

ARMANDO,
Exactly! Often times when the tour of the campus involves an indepth experience into the program, they will make that determination. You cannot perform the duties of a medical assistant if you can't handle blood, urine, or other bodily fluids.

John,
We are individuals and should always be treated with respect and dignity. An effective interviewer will find commalities with everyone they meet. Discover the world through the people you meet. They will change your life as well.

Anthony,
It can be overcome. Many schools provide the courses to assist them in developing their proficiency in English. Not having the proficiency may harbor their ability to work in some organizations.
Patty Aronoff
dont use negative words. Be unnderstanding and helpful
In my experience; some students may not look fit for the class on first apperence. As long as you disclose all requirements for the class in a very detailed way... the prospect student will realize on their own if the the program would benefit him/her without you having to point it out in words...
Thank you! I would of not known how to properly convey such a sensitive issue. Those reflective words are a great way to get the point across and I will definitely use them.
I strive to make that my daily goal, I feel that is a passion of mine, not to judge. I always interview someone as I would want my family member to be treated and respected as they are coming to us for assistance and we should always provide our best for everyone. I try and take time to answer everyone's concerns, ask questions to make sure they have all the necessary information and understanding, as I truly want everyone to succeed with their education and or training!
I feel that when english is not the first language but the student has the willingness to learn the language of medicine and healh care and with so many programs offered both online and at local educational institutions that this problem can be overcome. It may not be a quick fix but it is something that helps show how dedicated the prospective student is.
Susana,
This is an important part of the admissions interview. Active listening and exploratory questioning can arrive at a firm understanding of the needs of the prospective student.

Lauren,
The forum will give you ideas based on what other exams are used. Proficiency is important not only for comprehension in school but also may impact employment post graduation.
Patty Aronoff
I feel like I want to discuss with the student at that time why they want to attend the program and what do they like about the program and trying to find something that is more appropriate.
What are other institutions finding with language problems (English not the first language)? We give the WBST test to those who English is not a first language and/or "high school" equiv. was outside the US. We teach health care and a standard test of English still leave students where they feel they can't keep up.
Any suggestions? Other test that test specific vocabulary in health care?
Stephan ,
Yes, as we want them to be successful as individuals in meeting their career goals. We can not always jump to the top and most people need to work their way up. Very good advice.
Patty Aronoff
heather,
We cannot prevent someone from enrolling if they meet the entrance requirements and are determined. It is certainly their final decision.
