Accreditation
Are all schools required to have an accreditation?
Lisa,
Yes, you are correct. Accreditation may be programmatic. Some accrediting agencies only have programmatic accreditation available.

Programs can also be accredited. Depending on the course of study and the field you'll work in, the programs accredidation can be much more important than if the school is regionally or nationally accredited.
For example: medical trainings
wanda,
It is also a requirement to receive financial aid from the USDOE. Accreditation also includes secondary educational facilities.

No, Accreditation is a quality assurance and review process that institutions particpate in voluntarily. Accrediting associations are commonly comprised of colleges and universities with the common goal of establishing criteria for institutional quality.Accreditation indicates both an instution's fulfillment of the criteria established by an accrediting body and its commitment that it will continue to meet them.
Jack,
Each accrediting agency has its own requirements for application. Deciding which accrediting body to apply to takes much research and forethought. The expense and time involved will vary.

That is not the case sometimess. I work for a University which offers AS, BS and MBA and we are nationally accredited. The type of Accreditation that an instituion has depends many times on if it's a for-profit and a non for-profit. Example of this is that University of Miami is a Private non for profit institution but is regionally accredited. There are many other items that an instition is requiered to do to become a regionally accredited instition.
Sean,
So much is involved in selection. Obviously, cost is a factor. Two important facets to consider...your students and the programs you offer. This will determine which is best.

JEAN,
Start with CIE and get their list of recognized accrediting agencies. You want to make sure the agency is recognized by both USDOE and CIE. Do your research and find which agency is best for you. The application process is arduous and expensive so selection is important. There are school consultants available for a fee to help you with your application.

Ive been doing some research into this the last few days. Its pretty interesting to know the difference between accreditations and has been quite important for me to know the difference between national and regional. Where as regional is for more traditional schools and national is more of the tech or vocational schools. Regional accreditation seems to be alot more highly esteemed. Good to know when speaking to potentional students.
my school is not accreditated. How to be come accredited?
Erika,
No. Accreditation is voluntary. Many schools have been licensed for many years without it. It is not for every school.
