During a visit with a prospective student, it is very important to stay focused on what my role as an admissions representative is. Therefore, I am in total agreement with you Kim. Acknowledge them with, "That is an important question, and one of our financial aid representatives will go over all of that information with you."
Rebecca,
Keeping the conversation on a light tone is good and takes the pressure off. We need to make sure that the student feels that their questions are important and we will find the answer from someone who is an expert.
Kim,
Very good advice. Your process will be certainly used by others viewing the forum.
Aaron,
The catalog is so important for the student to read and understand its contents. We should always stress the importance of the catalog.
This is the process at our institution; we are not allowed to talk about financial aid except to say that it is available to those who qualify and in what forms.
on phone simply say this is a great question and continue on with your quesions if they ask again tell them great, when you come in date and time we will get to know one anotehr and i will give you information and have someone speak to you in that department everyones financail aid is different. In interview we have to tell them the enrollment fee and the credit per hour and those types of things but in depth questions I usually tease that I cant even do my own checking account let me get someone in that department to set with you and answer all your quesions.
When students ask me during an interview about financial aid, I simply rely, “We have financial aid representatives on campus to assist you with the entire process from general information to apply for student aid.†It is prudent for admissions advisors to stay in their area of specialty and let the financial aid representative counsel the student accordingly. It is important for institutions to remain compliant and the process of financial aid can be a convoluted experience for most students; therefore, it is necessary to have any student address their questions and concerns regarding grants, loans, scholarships, etc specifically with a knowledgeable financial aid representative.
"That is a good question" I will have one of our financial aid representatives cover that for you. Then I will make a note of the prospective student's question and have it addressed by a financial aid representative
