Entrance Assessments

I believe that it is a best practice to have an entrance assessment, to ensure students are able to be successful in that particular program before an investment of time and money is made. What do you think a reasonable amount of attempts should be or should one be required at all?

Ms. Bouvia

Although I believe 4 times it's a bit excessive. I beleive you may be trying to give some students an opportunity to keep on trying in the event that may have had a difficulty with the prior attempts. But I believe that the decision to purse further education should be one that is seriously thought and perhaps 3 times would be reasonable. My question in this case is would the entrance assessment, include as well, an "english proficiency exam"?

Erika,

It sets the tone and expectations of the school. If your school has a benchmark for admission, then your student must meet that mark. The benchmark should be set for success, not just entrance.

I believe enterance assessments are good, it helps keep the school(s) from being an open enrollment school. It also shows the prosepctive student that the school means business and they can't just be admitted for showing up to an interview. They have to work for their admission.

Ikira,

For some entrance testing, such as Wonderlic, there are specific requirements on when and how often the tests can be administered.

Carolina,

I agree. The cut score is important to determine if they can cognitively meet the requirements of the program. Additional assistance should be provided when needed in order to keep the students progressing in their field of study. Every student is different!

I also believe that it is the best practice to have an entrance assessment. I think a reasonable amount of attempts should be around 4 times.

Regardless of how one feels, an assessment to test at least basic skills and allow for the opportunity to judge whether or not the student will be able to participate appropriately in the class must be given. Follow ups and remedial can be given after the student enrolls if they are needed. This must be followed by regular communication with the instructor, as he or she is the principal point of accurately measuring instructional learning.

Garrison,
It depends upon your prospective students. Some require active follow up while others prefer not to be bothered. This is where knowing your client will provide you the guidance that you need.
