Storing Student Documents

Would a fire safe, lockable file cabinet serve as a secure place to store confidential documents. Would using a back up hard drive be recommended?

JoOni,
Perfect! As the custodian of records, they must be safe and secure. Having a back up is a must as your school's experience has proven!

we store our student files in a fireproof, locked file cabinet as well. We also use a hard drive for back up, which came in handy when our school suffered water damage in a local flood; good reason to store records electronically.

Sandra,
Student files should be kept locked in a fire proof cabinet. Many schools also have electronic versions of the files.

I would say that files need to be stored someplace and the fire proof safe, lockable file cabinet would be appropriate. The backup hard drive may be acceptable as well. One should keep in mind that how long and what is stored is usually determined by the organization and governed by its accrediting body.

Erica,
All student files should be in fireproof file cabinets. It is the school's responsibility to maintain student records and keep them in a safe and secure location.
