Understanding your institution
As an admission representative we need to have knowledge of all departments and what their main function is. This is beneficial to the potential student. We want to make sure that we are conveying the right information to the student.
Barbara,
They also need to know that departments work together.
Daylyn,
Very thorough post! Thank you...
Daylyn,
These are some very great points, many reps miss while sharing about their instutition. Another department which realy helped me gain a great understanding about our programs is our career services. They have recent knowledge about hiring and employment challenges in the industries in our community. It is their job to understand the nature of the programs we offer so that they can assist our graduates. The information they can provide is invaluable for reps who would like to gain greater understanding about the careers that our students are preparing to enter.
you are 100% correct, we should always have the students best interest at heart in order to help guide them in the right direction.
Edward,
So true...being in a classroom gives you hands on experience.
Another practice which has proven to be very helpful is to attend Program classes where the students participate in the learning process. It affords the Admission Reppresentative a strong sense of background in assisting new candidates in selecting their prospective careers.
Everyone does have a role and that is why it is important to understand every department and how it benefits the student. Remember that most institutions have the same or similar service/department. How will the prospect perceive your institution and what will they feel in their mind is of value to them. Many institutes have career services but how is this any different then the school they visited yesterday? VALUE in our knowledge is what the prospect should gain. Is is the fact that your insitution has been actively involved in the community for over 20 years networking and building relationships with employers? Is it having an advisory committe who are comprised of volunteers from employers in the community? How does your student success center/tutoring benefit the current students? Again it's not about going down a list of all the departments we have with the prospect, it's about having the prospect understand how that department relates/benefits students or prospect needs. If you understand the institution the prospect will understand it too and thus seek the tools to help them change their lives.
Monique,
Everyone has a role...
Dale,
It takes all departments to create a graduate.
you are right we should have knowlege of all the department
You’re absolutely right!! We admission representatives need to have the knowledge of all the departments’ and the main functions in order to effectively reciprocate that information to our prospective and current students.
Academics, career and student services, not to mention learning resource centers are essential to each institution. They promote what the institution is all about and what they do for the students and the community.
