Knowing other departments

Understanding the other departments in your institutions is important for the success of the institution and the students.

I agree, that it is important for prospective students to meet instructors and other department personnel as part of the overall experience. It helps to set the tone for the appointment and shows the school takes an interest in the student's well being. Also, helps to maintain rapport with student and may lead to additional referrals down the road!

I agree - at my institution the admissions staff personally introduces the student to all the people they will encounter throughout their program - it creates a sense of wholeness and order to the whole admissions experience.

I agree with you David. I have worked in 2 different departments and am now assisting in a 3rd temporarily. Having the knowledge from seeing how each department funtions over all impacts the knowledge for the institution. Definitely makes us one step ahead for sure.

David,
Continue to learn and expand your knowledge.

Yes, because it is easier to inform as they inquire.

I feel very comfortable in my knowledge of the school coming from other academic departments before working in our admissions department. This has drastically increased my knowledge of all of the services and of each department that offers those services to our students.

Dwight,
It brings the whole school together working on the same goal.

Adam,
By introducing staff and visiting the departments during your tour of facilities will start the process of connectivity. After the student starts class, there are many opportunities to revisit and reinforce.

Great question Adam, the student benefits from having a "big picture" of the services rendered, the high-level overview of those features, benefits and services offered by the institution. They can make informed decisions about going forward, taking the next step, and perhaps setting up an appointment with someone from the other departments, know knowing that those offerings are available, and a qualified individual will work with them on those regards.

The quandry is as follows: how do personnel from various departments benefit their students by informing them at given stages of the admissions process about factors that they will want to know about going forward, while at the same time NOT engaging in conversations for which we are not qualified.
