Career Services

My institution partnered with an online career counseling organization. I am not sure how effective this is for our students. I am interested in starting an onsite center and working it through our admissions office. Where do you suggest I begin?

Elaine,
Excellent!

This is a great idea and I would like to see it implimented at my school.

Bruce,
Your perspective is interesting having all the departments in one. It does bring it to a holistic view of your "employer" and why we are here.

At our school, admissions, student services, and career services are in the same department. The people who bring students in also help them throughout the program and continue to help them after graduation. These people are dedicated to the students. Of course, everybody on the staff has duties related to student services. After all, the students pay us for services we offer. Technically, they employ us. We are their employees. The entire staff must realize this reality.

Kristin,
Career Services works the same with my institution (Personal fulltime employees). It's so helpful having CS staff members on hand to meet with students and answer my questions. It benefits the current and future students to know HOW WE ARE GOING TO HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL! They need to see the LIGHT at the end of the tunnel and what their goals are after completing school!

Christy,
What a great idea! Thank you for your post.

One thing our career services department does is email weekly updates to all admissions representatives discussing upcoming recruiting events/job fairs for current students, examples and numbers of jobs available, and even current research and trends in the industry- it is SO helpful and is great information to share with prospective students!

Kristin,
Career Services plays a very important role in the sstuden's education. They are preparing them for life after classes.

At my campus, career services is a SEPERATE department from admissions. They are onsite and available to current students, as well as to meet and speak with students that are interested in enrolling here at our college. They are a great tool and resource! I think every school needs this! It is sooo helpful!

Frances,
Start with your community at large. If you have a Program Advisory Committee, they can get you pointed in the right direction. Having a career fair, inviting local employers to come to your school is also an excellent resource.
