Graduation

Why is graduation not mandatory when you complete a program

Jacqueline,

Isn't it a grand affair! The students look forward to the day to share their success with family and friends.

Patty Aronoff

Altho it is not mandatory, it is very important to most of us, at my school we have students that struggled to get back and fourth to school, we have single moms that are trying to get a better future for their children as well as people trying to get back on their feet after a bad experience it their lives. Most of these students have a relative there pushing them through and in some cases even struggling right along with them. So to us at our school it is very important that all that effort is recognized and that it was well worth while, and that it is better late than never.

Debra,
Graduation ceremonies are the culmination of so much achievement. However it is celebrated, it is still an event to be proud of.

A graduation ceremony is just that--a ceremony and a time to share your achievements with friends and family. However, many students just want to take their diploma and go to work. That is okay if that is what they want. I love to share with the students as they come across the stage and I hand them diplomas. It cannot be mandatory though--they are graduates and as such have the option of attending or not.

Jean-Ronel,
It is really a celebration however we make it!

I do not provide graduation ceremonies because students do not want to come to a short term program graduation. We provide free coffee and donuts for the duration of the program to make up for it.

Charles,
It is a celebration with friends and family from both school and home.

Paris,
Excellent question for the forum. Many schools have great ideas and I look forward to their posts.

We have graduation once a year, and invite all students who have graduated throughout the year. We typically get a good response of graduates that confirm they will attend, but then "no-show" for the actual ceremony. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Graduation can not be forced on the student, but it gives them a chance to share with family and friends their sucess as well as creating famly pride.

Graduation means accomplishment, so for lots of students having a graduation ceremony it's very important; some institutions do not offer those very often, but in the classroom they have something special on their last day of class.

I agree with Debbi--It is a major accomplishment that the grad should be very proud of completing/accomplishing their personal goals. I think the graduation ceremony serves as "The aHA moment" and also gives positive reinforcement to follow through with other personal life goals. I strongly encourage all educators to encourage their graduates to participate in the ceremonial experience:)

Monica,
Graduation is to be celebrated with their daily and friends cheering them on.

We give our students the option to attend gradution. It is a small celebration it is small but they seem to enjoy it.

Paul,
The ceremonies are a celebration of their success.

Bruce,
Graduation is the culmination of the educational experience. It is a time to be shared with family and friends who have watched you progress and reached your goal.

Debi,
Graduation is the achievement we all work towards with our students. A celebration!

A graduation ceremony large or samll symbolizes a great accomplishment. Settng goals and reaching them through higher education should always be celebrated. It is a great accomplishment!

We do not charge the students for graduation. Their caps and gowns are provided. I suppose a fee for all students could be applied for this. We are a small school with a high degree of camaraderie among students. Graduation is simple but extremely emotional for our students.

Remember, these are your alumni. If you merely kick them out the door at the end of the program, they will remember that. You want to establish the idea that the school continues to care about them and their success.
