Student Services
Recognizing and understanding student services is a critical aspect of the an admissions rep. This is important because we do not want the students to feel helpless or lost for resources once they are accepted into the school. Libraries, placement, and even counseling are all beneficial aspects of a students success in achieving their academic goals.
Doria,
It really depends on your school policy. But in any area, there are local agencies to help like the United Way. Get their contact information and pass it along. For academic concerns, your Director of Education can assist. Many people just want to talk and have someone carefully listen.

Being at a small institute we do not have a department that is designated for student services but we have a network of a few people that handle any student issues. How can I as an admission representative help some of the students with their concerns and issues without going beyond my scope of duties?
Melinda,
Having student services involved from the beginning is a way to give your students the best possible start in getting that job of their dreams. Introduce the staff on your tour with your prospective student to start the ball rolling.

Having Student Service is a huge part in our students success. "Life" happens every day and sometimes there are challenging situations that our students might need help with. There are many services that we may know of that they might help a student in need.

Not only is it important to have the system in place, but even more important is having the right people in those positions. Too often, in all departments, there is someone who is not willing to go the extra step for a student. In Student Services you are the advocate for the student. You are the person who is there to listen and to help. You should love the job that your in and know the importance of what you are doing.
Natalie,
Life has some very difficult challenges. Many people don't know where to get assistance or have the resolve to push ahead.

I agree, a support system is essential to help a student overcome challenges not only in school, but in the real world
Student Services is very important and it is necessary to go beyond the basics. We try to arrange many opportunities for the students to assemble with other students, faculty, and staff. During afternoon orientation before classes begin we have a meet and greet for the new students. We also provide an evening orientation where new students and their family members or friends come tour the school and learn about ways to support the student.
Rhyan,
Student services are critical to student success. Life has its challenges and having support systems available can make the difference.
